Description
R. Pouillon Champagne Grande Vallée Extra Brut is a finely etched, grower Champagne that captures the character of the heart of the Marne Valley in a single, expressive cuvée. Crafted from Pinot Noir (Pinot Nero), Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, it offers a drier, more precise style that highlights terroir over dosage. This non-vintage Extra Brut nods to Champagne’s traditions while championing the modern movement of artisanal, vineyard-driven producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Grande Vallée Extra Brut shows a luminous pale gold color with a fine, persistent bead and elegant mousse. The nose is refined yet inviting, opening with notes of crisp orchard fruit—green apple and pear—layered with citrus zest, white flowers, and hints of brioche, crushed chalk, and roasted hazelnut.
On the palate, the wine is taut, vibrant and beautifully balanced, with a clean, dry profile that lets the fruit and mineral notes shine. Expect a mix of juicy apple, stone fruit and lemon peel, supported by subtle pastry tones, almond, and a touch of salinity. The Pinot Noir and Meunier bring structure, red-fruited depth and gentle spice, while Chardonnay lifts the wine with tension and finesse. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, driven by chalky minerality and brisk acidity. Enjoyable now for its energy and clarity, this NV cuvée also has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 3–5 years in bottle.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected parcels across the Champagne region’s Grand and Premier Cru slopes of the Grande Vallée de la Marne, this cuvée reflects vineyards rooted in chalk, limestone and clay, which lend both tension and depth. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal maturity to preserve freshness and ensure meticulous sorting in the vineyard. Pouillon favors a gentle, artisanal approach: fermentation typically takes place in a mix of stainless steel and neutral oak, allowing each parcel to express its character. The base wines are blended with reserve wines for added complexity, then undergo secondary fermentation in bottle following the traditional méthode champenoise. Extended aging on the lees builds texture and autolytic nuance, while the Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine focused, dry and terroir-driven.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is a versatile partner at the table, particularly suited to refined, ingredient-driven cuisine. Pair it with oysters, scallop crudo, sashimi, sushi, or simple grilled fish to highlight its saline edge and minerality. It also works beautifully with soft cheeses, fried tempura, poultry dishes, and light tapas-style plates such as charcuterie and gougères. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) in a tulip-shaped Champagne glass to emphasize both aroma and texture. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a short, gentle decant in a wide carafe can help the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Champagne R. Pouillon is a family-run grower estate based in the heart of Champagne, known for crafting characterful, terroir-focused wines from its own vineyards rather than purchased fruit. Founded in the mid-20th century, the domaine has steadily earned a reputation among enthusiasts for its thoughtful vineyard work, careful élevage and low-intervention philosophy. Working closely with the varied soils of the Marne Valley, Pouillon emphasizes precision, balance and transparency of origin in every cuvée. Today, the estate stands as part of the vanguard of quality-minded récoltant-manipulant producers, helping to redefine Champagne as a wine of place as much as a symbol of celebration.
