R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva 2011 is a rare and highly sought-after white Rioja, made from 90% Viura (Macabeo) and 10% Malvasia. It captures everything the house is famous for: long ageing, layered complexity, and a distinctly traditional style that has made López de Heredia one of the most respected names in Rioja.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a pale golden hue that hints at its extended maturation. The nose is beautifully nuanced, unfolding with preserved lemon, beeswax, orange peel, and chamomile, alongside the kind of tertiary aromas that only come with time in bottle and barrel. On the palate, the wine is dry, focused, and lightly textured, with a vibrant line of acidity that keeps everything taut and precise. There is impressive length and purity, with a subtle waxy richness balanced by freshness. While already expressive, it still has plenty of aging potential and will continue to evolve gracefully for years to come.

Production
Only a small part of the Tondonia vineyard is planted with white grapes, which makes production extremely limited. The wine is fermented in old 6,000-liter wooden vats and then aged for 6 years in American oak, using a mix of new, medium-aged, and very old barrels to support slow, measured development rather than overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine, especially with dishes that have depth and gentle richness. It pairs beautifully with roast poultry, grilled or baked fish, shellfish, creamy sauces, and mature hard cheeses. Serve slightly cool, around 10-12°C, and consider decanting if enjoyed young to help reveal its full aromatic complexity.
