R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva 2009 is a rare and highly sought-after white Rioja, made from old-vine Viura and Malvasia from one of the estate’s most prized parcels. Released only after an extended élevage of six years in barrel and seven years in bottle, it embodies the historic, age-worthy style that has made López de Heredia one of Rioja’s most revered names.

Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, this wine already shows the graceful maturity of a classic white Reserva. The nose is layered and distinctive, with notes of preserved lemon, orange peel, beeswax, chamomile, and subtle oxidative complexity, balanced by a clear sense of freshness. On the palate, it is dry and medium-bodied, with focused acidity, fine texture, and remarkable length. The fruit is restrained and nuanced rather than overtly ripe, and the wine’s tertiary character is already beautifully expressed, while still suggesting more years of development ahead for those willing to cellar it further.

Production
Made from Viura and Malvasia grown in the Tondonia vineyard in Rioja, where only a small portion is planted to white varieties, production is naturally limited. The wine is fermented in old 6,000-liter oak vats and then aged in American oak barrels for six years, with only about 10% new oak and the remainder in seasoned casks of varying ages, followed by seven years of bottle aging before release.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for richly flavored seafood, roast chicken, salt cod, creamy mushroom dishes, and dishes with nutty or herbal elements. Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, and consider decanting gently if the bottle is showing reduced aromas on opening or if you wish to give the wine a little more air.
