R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva 2008 is a rare and highly sought-after white Rioja, made from Viura (Macabeo) with a touch of Malvasia. Released only after an unusually long period of aging, it reflects the classic López de Heredia style: slow-made, deeply traditional, and built for complexity rather than immediacy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, mature golden hue that hints at its extended evolution. The nose is layered and distinctive, with notes of preserved lemon, beeswax, orange peel, and chamomile, underpinned by the savory, tertiary character that defines the estate’s wines. On the palate, it is dry, focused, and finely textured, with vibrant acidity giving the wine a lean, precise shape. There is beautiful length and clarity, and while it is already highly expressive, this Reserva still has significant aging potential for those willing to cellar it a little longer.

Production
The grapes come from the famed Tondonia vineyard in La Rioja, where only a small portion is planted to white varieties, making production extremely limited. Fermentation takes place in old 6,000-liter wooden vats, followed by aging in American oak, with just 10% new barrels, 40% around 10 years old, and the remaining 50% considerably older. The wine spends six years in barrel and a further seven years in bottle before release, a slow maturation that shapes its complex, developed profile.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile white for refined dishes such as roast poultry, grilled lobster, mushroom risotto, aged Manchego, or oily fish like turbot and hake. Serve it slightly chilled, around 10-12°C, and consider brief decanting if opening a younger bottle to allow its aromatics to fully unfold.
