Description

Quintodecimo Vigna Quintodecimo Taurasi Riserva 2019 is a benchmark expression of Aglianico from one of Campania’s most revered estates. This single-vineyard Taurasi is crafted to showcase the full depth, power and finesse that Irpinia can deliver, especially in a top vintage like 2019. It is a wine for collectors and serious enthusiasts who appreciate age‑worthy, terroir-driven reds with real personality. The Vigna Quintodecimo parcel is the home vineyard of the estate and one of its crown jewels, yielding very low quantities of intensely flavored grapes. As a Taurasi Riserva, it benefits from extended aging before release, allowing its naturally firm structure and complex aromatics to knit together. Taurasi is often called the “Barolo of the South,” and Quintodecimo has played an important role in elevating the appellation to world‑class status.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Vigna Quintodecimo Taurasi Riserva shows a deep, concentrated ruby hue with garnet highlights emerging at the rim, signaling both richness and the beginning of development. The color is dense and almost opaque at the core, with slow, thick legs that hint at impressive extract and structure. The nose is refined yet intense, opening with black cherry, ripe plum and blackberry compote, followed by notes of dried violets, tobacco leaf and dark chocolate. With air, more layers appear: sweet spices (clove, cinnamon, star anise), roasted coffee, licorice, graphite and a subtle smoky, mineral edge that speaks of volcanic soils. There’s a beautiful balance between fruit, spice and savory complexity. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and precise, with a core of dark fruits (black cherry, blackcurrant, damson) framed by firm, fine‑grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavors of black tea, cocoa, balsamic herbs, leather and a saline, ferrous minerality carry through the long, persistent finish. Despite its concentration, the wine remains beautifully composed, with an almost Burgundian clarity of fruit and structure. The 2019 has significant aging potential; it is structured for the long haul. While it can be approached now with proper aeration, it will reward patience over the next 12–20 years, gaining tertiary notes of truffle, forest floor, dried rose and cigar box as the tannins melt and the palate becomes even more layered and harmonious.

Production
Vigna Quintodecimo lies in the heart of Irpinia in Campania, at altitude in the Taurasi DOCG zone, where cool nights and warm days help Aglianico ripen slowly while preserving acidity. The vineyard sits on predominantly calcareous clay soils with volcanic and tufaceous components, giving both power and a distinctive mineral backbone to the wine. Yields are kept very low to maximize concentration and purity of fruit. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal phenolic ripeness, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Quintodecimo is known for meticulous, almost obsessive attention to detail in vinification: long, controlled macerations extract depth and structure without harshness, and fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled vessels to preserve aromatic precision. The Taurasi Riserva is then aged for an extended period in carefully selected oak (often a combination of barriques and larger casks) followed by further bottle aging before release, ensuring the wine reaches the market already showing integration, complexity and balance.

Food & Serving
This Taurasi Riserva is a superb match for richly flavored, slow‑cooked dishes and robust meats. Think braised lamb shanks, osso buco, wild boar ragù, roasted venison, grilled ribeye or aged steaks, as well as deeply savory dishes with porcini or black truffle. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Pecorino or old Caciocavallo, and with hearty, tomato‑based southern Italian dishes. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity and structural finesse. Decanting is strongly recommended, especially in its youth: allow at least 1.5–2 hours in a decanter to let the tannins soften and the bouquet fully unfurl. In its prime drinking window, a gentle splash decant before service will be enough to awaken its more subtle, tertiary notes.

Producer
Quintodecimo is one of the leading names in Southern Italy, founded and led by renowned oenologist Professor Luigi Moio in the hills of Mirabella Eclano in Irpinia, Campania. From its inception, the estate has focused on expressing the greatness of Campania’s native varieties—particularly Aglianico, Fiano and Greco—through low yields, precise viticulture and rigorously thoughtful winemaking. Within the Taurasi DOCG, Quintodecimo has become a reference point for quality, helping to redefine perceptions of Aglianico on the international stage and often being compared to top producers in Barolo and Brunello for its commitment to site expression and age‑worthy reds. The estate’s wines regularly receive high scores and critical acclaim, and Vigna Quintodecimo Taurasi Riserva stands among its flagship bottlings, showcasing just how elegant, complex and enduring Taurasi can be.
