Quintodecimo Terra d'Eclano Aglianico Irpinia 2021 is a refined expression of Aglianico from the hills of Irpinia in Campania, Italy. Crafted as a single-varietal cuvée from five carefully selected vineyards, it unites different facets of the grape and terroir into one harmonious wine. Positioned as the ‘younger brother’ of Quintodecimo’s Taurasi DOCG, it already delivers a level of depth, elegance and precision that far exceeds a typical entry wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Terra d’Eclano 2021 shows a deep, intense ruby red with violet highlights, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with the dark, varietal-typical fruit of Aglianico: black cherry, ripe plum and blackberry, intertwined with hints of violet, wild herbs and a touch of graphite. Fresh, brighter notes of redcurrant and blood orange lift the aromatics, while fine accents of cocoa, sweet spices and delicate toasted oak reflect its careful élevage. On the palate, the wine is structured yet graceful, with a full, velvety texture and vibrant acidity that keeps everything fresh and precise. Flavours of black cherry, marasca, damson and blackcurrant are layered with notes of licorice, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate and a subtle mineral edge from the clay and volcanic soils. The tannins are firm but polished, promising excellent evolution in bottle. While approachable after a short decant, the 2021 has clear aging potential and should develop more complexity and tertiary nuances over the next 8–12 years.

Production
Terra d’Eclano is sourced from five distinct Aglianico vineyards in the commune of Mirabella Eclano, at the heart of Irpinia in Campania. The area’s mix of clay-rich and volcanic soils, combined with altitude and a relatively cool climate for southern Italy, gives the wines their characteristic tension, depth and mineral backbone. Yields are deliberately kept very low, and all grapes are harvested by hand into small crates to ensure the bunches remain perfectly intact and pristine on arrival at the winery. After careful sorting, the must undergoes fermentation on the skins to extract colour, aroma and fine tannins. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in oak, with approximately 30% maturing in new barriques and the remainder in previously used barrels, striking a balance between purity of fruit and subtle, integrated oak influence before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Aglianico is a superb partner for richly flavoured dishes and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Think slow-braised lamb shanks, ossobuco, roasted game birds, grilled steak with rosemary, or hearty ragùs over pappardelle, as well as aged hard cheeses like Pecorino and mature Parmigiano Reggiano. It also pairs beautifully with earthy mushroom dishes and truffle-based recipes. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromatics to unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and fully reveal its complexity.
