Description
Quintodecimo Falanghina Via Del Campo 2022 is a refined, single-vineyard white from the hills of Irpinia in Campania, crafted by one of Southern Italy’s most acclaimed estates. This wine showcases Falanghina at a rare level of precision and depth, balancing vibrant freshness with layered complexity. Rooted in an ancient Greek heritage and sourced from a small, carefully tended plot, it is a modern benchmark for the variety and the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Via Del Campo 2022 presents a luminous straw yellow with subtle green reflections, hinting at its youthful vibrancy. The nose is remarkably pure and expressive, opening with notes of ripe citrus—lemon zest and pink grapefruit—alongside white peach, pear, and wild herbs. As it unfolds, you’ll find delicate floral tones of acacia and broom, overlaying a refined, chalky minerality and a whisper of sweet spice from partial barrel aging.
On the palate, the wine is both taut and generous: a lively, saline backbone supports a creamy, almost glyceric texture from extended lees contact. Flavors of stone fruit, citrus oil, and crisp green apple are interwoven with hints of almond, fennel, and a subtle toasty nuance from the French barriques. The finish is long, precise, and distinctly mineral, leaving a mouthwatering impression. While already highly enjoyable in its youth, this Falanghina has the structure and intensity to develop beautifully over 5–7 years, gaining further complexity and honeyed, nutty notes with time in bottle.
Production
Via del Campo is a single vineyard in Mirabella Eclano, in the mountainous landscape of Irpinia, Campania. The site is characterized by clay and limestone soils, which naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s tension, elegance, and fine mineral backbone. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve Falanghina’s aromatic purity and bright acidity. In the cellar, roughly one third of the must is fermented and aged in French barriques, while the remainder matures in stainless steel tanks. The wine spends about eight months on fine lees, with regular bâtonnage, building texture, complexity, and subtle savory depth without overshadowing the grape’s fresh, varietal character.
Food & Serving
This Falanghina is a superb partner for refined Mediterranean cuisine. Think crudo and carpaccio of fish, grilled seabass, octopus, and shellfish, as well as seafood risotto, linguine alle vongole, and delicate vegetable dishes such as asparagus, artichoke, or zucchini flowers. It also pairs beautifully with fresh goat’s cheese and soft, mild cow’s milk cheeses. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatics and minerality. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a large white-wine glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will allow its layers of fruit and savory complexity to fully emerge.
Producer
Quintodecimo, founded by renowned oenologist Luigi Moio in Irpinia, has quickly become one of the leading names in Southern Italian fine wine. The estate is known for its meticulous, vineyard-driven approach and its focus on elevating native Campanian varieties such as Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Aglianico, and others to world-class status. Working with carefully selected, high-altitude sites and low yields, Quintodecimo combines deep local knowledge with precise, modern winemaking. The wines regularly receive top accolades from Italian and international critics, and Via Del Campo stands as one of the reference expressions of Falanghina from Campania’s inland hills.
