Description

Quinta Água Alta Fine Tawny is a characterful, non-vintage Port that captures the classic warmth and elegance of the Douro in a refined, approachable style. Crafted from traditional Portuguese grapes grown high on the steep schist slopes, it offers a beautifully balanced expression of tawny Port—rich yet lifted, complex yet easy to enjoy. With roots dating back at least to 1838, this estate has transformed from a discreet supplier to the great Port houses into a proud, independent producer bottling wines under its own name, now earning acclaim in its own right.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Fine Tawny shows an inviting amber hue with copper and brick-orange highlights that speak to its time in wood. The color is clear and bright, with a slightly viscous rim that hints at both sweetness and concentration. The nose opens with classic tawny aromas: toasted nuts, caramel, toffee and dried fruits such as figs, dates and raisins, supported by hints of orange peel, baking spice and a gentle touch of vanilla from barrel aging. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied yet well-poised, offering a harmonious balance between ripe, sweet fruit and a fresh acidity that keeps everything lively. Expect layers of candied orange, roasted almonds, dried apricot and soft red fruits, intertwined with notes of butterscotch and subtle spice. The finish is long, smooth and nutty, with a delicate warmth from the fortification and a clean, slightly caramelized aftertaste. As a Fine Tawny, it is designed to be enjoyed on release rather than cellared for decades, but an unopened bottle will easily keep well for several years. Once opened, it will hold its character for several weeks if properly recorked and stored cool.

Production
Quinta Água Alta sits high on the dramatic, terraced slopes of the Douro, where poor, schistous soils, intense sunshine and marked temperature shifts between day and night produce low yields and grapes of remarkable concentration. The altitude suggested by the estate’s name—Água Alta, or “high water”—means cooler nights and a slower, more even ripening, preserving freshness in the fruit. The traditional Douro varieties Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca are harvested by hand on steep vineyards where machinery is impractical, ensuring careful selection of bunches. After fermentation, which is arrested by the addition of grape spirit to retain natural sweetness and fortify the wine, the Port is matured in wood casks to develop its tawny character, color and the signature nutty, caramelized complexity. Multiple vintages are blended to create a consistent Fine Tawny style that reflects the quinta’s house character and the vision of its winemaker.

Food & Serving
Quinta Água Alta Fine Tawny is a versatile after-dinner companion, pairing beautifully with nut-based desserts, crème brûlée, caramel tarts, pecan pie, and dishes featuring dried fruits. It also works wonderfully with aged hard cheeses, blue cheeses, toasted almonds or simply a plate of dried figs and walnuts. Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to highlight its balance and aromatic complexity. Decanting is generally not necessary for a Fine Tawny, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the aromas to unfurl nicely.

Producer
The history of Quinta Água Alta reaches back at least to 1838, when the estate began cultivating vines on the steep, narrow terraces of the Douro, in a zone so rugged that the roads become too tight for trucks to pass. For five generations, the Borges family quietly supplied their high-quality grapes and wines to some of the major Port houses, building a reputation within the trade rather than on labels. In recent years, the younger generation—sisters Louisa and Maria Borges—made the pivotal decision to bottle under their own name, allowing them to imprint a personal style and push quality even higher. Maria oversees administration and marketing while Louisa, trained at some of the region’s most respected Port producers, leads the winemaking. Since stepping into the spotlight, Quinta Água Alta has quickly begun to win prizes and recognition, establishing itself as a rising estate with deep roots and modern ambition in the Douro Valley.
