Description

Quinta Água Alta 10 Years White is a refined aged white Port from the dramatic, steep slopes of the Douro Valley. Crafted from traditional Douro grape varieties and matured for an average of 10 years, it offers a complex, nutty, and gently honeyed profile that balances freshness with maturity. Produced in small quantities under the family’s own name, it showcases a deeply personal expression of a historic quinta now stepping confidently into the spotlight.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 10-year-old white Port shows a deep golden to amber hue, with shimmering highlights that hint at its time in wood. The nose is layered and expressive, offering notes of dried apricot, orange peel, toasted almonds, and hazelnuts, supported by nuances of honey, vanilla, and a subtle saline edge from its Douro origins. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, silky, and wonderfully balanced between sweetness and vibrant acidity. Flavours of caramelized citrus, baked apple, figs, and roasted nuts unfold gradually, joined by hints of spice and a delicate oxidative character that adds depth without heaviness. The finish is long, warming, and elegant, with lingering notes of toasted nuts and citrus zest. Although designed to be enjoyed upon release, a well-stored bottle can comfortably evolve for several more years, gaining extra complexity and softness over time.

Production
Quinta Água Alta sits high on the steep, terraced slopes of the Douro, in vineyards so elevated and narrow that trucks cannot reach them, preserving a traditional, hands-on approach. The schistous soils, hot summers, and marked diurnal shifts create concentrated, characterful fruit. Grapes such as Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca are typically harvested by hand from these challenging terraces to ensure careful selection. After fermentation is arrested with grape spirit to retain natural sweetness, the wine is aged oxidatively in seasoned wooden casks, where it spends around a decade slowly developing its complex colour, aroma, and flavour profile before careful blending and bottling.

Food & Serving
This 10-year-old white Port is a versatile partner at the table: serve it slightly chilled with foie gras, pâtés, hard cheeses like aged Manchego or Comté, or nut-based desserts such as almond tart, crème brûlée, or orange and almond cake. It also pairs beautifully with salted nuts, olives, and richer seafood dishes such as cod croquettes or prawn risotto. For optimal enjoyment, serve at around 10–12°C. Decanting is generally not necessary, though opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the aromas to fully unfurl in the glass.

Producer
Quinta da Água Alta can be traced back at least to 1838 and has been in the hands of the Borges family for five generations. For many years, the estate supplied grapes and wines to the major Port houses, quietly contributing to some of the region’s best-known blends. In more recent times, the family decided to bottle under their own label, allowing them to imprint a more personal style and pursue even higher quality standards. Today, the estate is led by the young sisters Louisa and Maria Borges: Maria oversees administration and marketing, while Louisa, trained at some of the Douro’s great houses, is the winemaker. Under their stewardship, Quinta da Água Alta has begun to win awards and recognition, emerging as an exciting, quality-focused name within the Douro’s new generation of producers.
