Description
Querciabella Camartina 2020 is a refined Super Tuscan that marries the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the elegance and lift of Sangiovese. Sourced from meticulously farmed vineyards in the heart of Tuscany, it is produced only in vintages that meet the estate’s exacting standards, making each release a carefully curated expression of the year. Certified organic since 1988 and fully converted to rigorous biodynamic practices by 2000, Camartina reflects not just Tuscan terroir, but a long-standing commitment to sustainable, low-intervention viticulture.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Camartina 2020 typically shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with youthful violet highlights, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry and wild berries, layered with notes of violet, cedar, tobacco leaf, and a touch of Tuscan scrub—rosemary, sage, and a whisper of graphite and spice from careful oak aging.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with Cabernet’s firm, fine-grained tannins seamlessly interwoven with Sangiovese’s bright acidity and red-fruited energy. Flavors of cassis, black cherry, plum and macerated raspberry are supported by nuances of cocoa, sweet spice, leather and a subtle mineral streak running through the core. The finish is long, precise and savory, suggesting excellent aging potential; in a good cellar, the 2020 vintage should evolve gracefully over 12–18 years, gaining tertiary notes of truffle, dried herbs and forest floor while retaining its balance and freshness.
Production
Camartina is drawn from high-quality vineyard parcels in Tuscany where altitude, well-drained galestro and limestone-rich soils, and significant diurnal temperature swings help preserve aromatic complexity and natural acidity. The vineyards have been cultivated organically since 1988 and according to strict biodynamic principles since 2000, with an emphasis on biodiversity, soil vitality, and minimal intervention. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and vinified in small lots to respect the character of each parcel and variety. Fermentation proceeds with attentive temperature control and gentle extraction to preserve finesse over power, followed by maturation—traditionally in fine French oak barriques and tonneaux—allowing the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese to integrate, gain texture, and develop aromatic complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
Querciabella Camartina 2020 is a natural partner for refined Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, particularly dishes that echo its depth and savory complexity. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with herbs, braised short ribs, game birds, or richer pasta dishes with wild boar ragù or porcini mushrooms; aged pecorino and other firm, mature cheeses also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit purity and aromatic nuances. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the tannins to relax and the bouquet to fully unfurl; as it ages, a gentle decant shortly before serving will help separate any sediment and open up the more evolved aromas.
