Description
Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir Central Otago 2020 is a finely tuned, mineral-driven expression of one of New Zealand’s most celebrated red wine regions. Sourced from two organically farmed sites, including mature vines in Lowburn and a fresher, more lifted parcel in Bannockburn, it combines depth, precision, and energy in a distinctly elegant style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vibrant ruby hue with a polished, youthful clarity. The nose is layered and fragrant, opening with dark and red cherries, baked raspberries, thyme, red flowers, vanilla, and a subtle wild-herb character that gives the wine real intrigue.
The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with ripe fruit framed by spice, supple tannins, and a refined, mouth-coating texture. There is impressive intensity without heaviness, and the wine’s structure suggests it will develop gracefully over the next few years, gaining complexity with time.
Production
This Pinot Noir comes from two organically farmed Central Otago vineyards with contrasting character: Lowburn, home to some of the region’s oldest vines, contributing depth and concentration, and Bannockburn, adding freshness and lift. The fruit was partly fermented with 15% whole clusters, then matured for 12 months in French oak, including 25% new barrels, before a further 6 months in stainless steel to preserve purity and balance.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine slightly chilled, ideally around 15–17°C, to bring out its aromatic lift and fine texture. It pairs wonderfully with duck, roast quail, venison, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, or herb-roasted poultry. Decanting is not essential, but a brief decant can help open the wine if enjoyed young.
Producer
Pyramid Valley was founded in 2000 by Mike and Claudia Weersing and quickly became one of New Zealand’s most respected producers, known for its biodynamic philosophy and expressive, site-driven wines. In 2017, the estate was taken over by Steve Smith and Brian Seth, who have continued to build on that legacy with a focus on premium parcels, including Managa Estate in Lowburn. The winery has earned strong international acclaim for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and remains a benchmark name in New Zealand fine wine.
