Description

Promontory 2018 is one of Napa Valley’s most compelling expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, born from a wild, rugged corner of the Harlan family’s winegrowing realm. This vintage marries precision and power with an almost Burgundian sense of tension and detail, making it a benchmark bottle for collectors who prize both structure and finesse. Lauded by critics such as Robert Parker’s team, the 2018 is already impressive in youth, yet clearly built for decades of evolution.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Promontory 2018 shows a deep, saturated ruby to garnet hue with a vivid, glass-staining core, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is finely etched rather than flamboyant: aromas of ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry and black plum are lifted by notes of crushed mint, graphite, flinty river stones and subtle dried herbs. Hints of tobacco leaf, cocoa nib and cedar emerge with air, adding dimension and complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a striking sense of energy and linearity. Pure Cabernet fruit—ripe cherry, cassis and blackberry—unfolds over a framework of firm, ultra-fine tannins and bright, mouthwatering acidity. The mineral character suggested on the nose reappears as a cool, stony undertone, giving the wine both “tension” and precision. The finish is long, silken and persistent, slowly releasing notes of spice, dark chocolate and fresh mint. While already showing exceptional balance, this 2018 is clearly poised for a long life; expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–30 years, gaining additional nuance, softness and aromatic complexity with cellaring.

Production
Promontory comes from a dramatic, isolated hillside terroir on the western side of Napa Valley, nestled between Harlan Estate and Dominus yet distinct in geology, exposure and climate. The vineyards sit on a mosaic of fractured rock and diverse soils, with steep slopes and varying aspects that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Grapes are harvested by hand in small lots, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the final wine. Vinification is guided by a low-intervention philosophy: gentle extraction, careful temperature control and a strong emphasis on preserving the site’s inherent character. The Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in carefully selected oak barrels—largely French—allowing the wine to gain texture and aromatic complexity without overwhelming its mineral-driven core.

Food & Serving
Promontory 2018 is best matched with refined, deeply flavored dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. Think dry-aged ribeye or Wagyu beef, slow-braised short ribs, roast lamb with rosemary and olives, or venison with wild mushrooms and a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano, and simple preparations that highlight top-quality ingredients. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to showcase its aromatic detail and textural finesse. Decanting is strongly recommended, especially in its youth: give it 2–3 hours before serving now, and even longer if opened within the first 5–10 years of its life, to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to fully unfurl.

Producer
Promontory is the visionary hillside project of the Harlan family, one of Napa Valley’s most influential and revered winegrowing dynasties. Discovered by Bill Harlan in the 1980s but fully realized only decades later, the Promontory estate occupies a remote, rugged ridge on the western side of the valley, defined by dramatic topography and complex geologies seldom seen in classic Napa vineyards. This singular location, combined with an uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar, has quickly positioned Promontory among the region’s most sought-after and collectible wines. While the estate is comparatively young, it benefits from the Harlan family’s deep experience and exacting standards, and its bottlings are already recognized for their distinctive mineral drive, longevity and quiet, powerful refinement.
