Description

Promontory 2017 in DBMG (3 L) format is a commanding expression of Napa Valley, crafted by one of the region’s most coveted estates. This double magnum bottling offers an immersive, long-term experience of a profound vintage, ideal for collectors and for sharing at the table. Combining power, precision and energy, the 2017 stands out as one of the most intellectually engaging Napa Cabernet-based wines of its year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Promontory shows a deep, opaque garnet to granate-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is wonderfully perfumed and layered, with aromas of baked blackberry, plum preserve and blackcurrant pastille unfolding into star anise, violet, dark espresso, and freshly turned earth. Subtle hints of graphite and warm stones add an almost mineral tension beneath the dark fruit. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, poised and refined rather than overtly opulent. The texture is supple but structured, with finely grained, beautifully managed tannins framing a core of juicy black fruits. Notes of blackberries, ripe plums, cassis and cocoa intertwine with savory undertones of earth, spice and a touch of espresso, leading to a long, persistent, slightly earthy finish that feels remarkably energetic for such a concentrated wine. While already impressive with some air, the wine clearly has the architecture to age gracefully for 15–25 years or more in a 3 L format, developing additional complexity and tertiary nuance over time.

Production
Promontory is sourced from a dramatic, secluded hillside territory on the western edges of Oakville in Napa Valley, where rugged slopes, varied exposures and fractured volcanic and sedimentary soils create a unique, low-yielding terroir. The 2017 is based predominantly on Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of other Bordeaux varieties as permitted by the estate’s blend philosophy, all harvested by hand in small lots at optimal ripeness. Vinification is meticulous and parcel-driven: grapes are carefully sorted, then fermented in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve aromatic purity and fine-tune tannin extraction. The wine is aged for an extended period in carefully selected barrels (including a significant proportion of new French oak) and neutral casks, allowing structure to integrate and the wine’s distinct site expression to emerge with clarity and depth before bottling.

Food & Serving
This 2017 Promontory is an outstanding partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, charcoal-grilled lamb, slow-braised short ribs, venison, or duck with blackcurrant or blackberry jus. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses like Comté, Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given its youth and structure, decanting is strongly recommended—60–90 minutes for current drinking, or longer if opened in the near term—to allow the aromatics to unfurl and the tannins to soften. In a 3 L bottle, it will evolve slowly over the course of an evening, gaining nuance in the glass.

Producer
Promontory is part of the Harlan family’s elite Napa portfolio, emerging from a previously untamed and largely unknown tract of land discovered by Bill Harlan in the 1980s and pursued in earnest in the 2000s. Sitting in the rugged, mist-laced hills between Oakville and the Mayacamas range, the estate has quickly become one of Napa Valley’s most talked-about, terroir-driven projects, considered by many as a modern benchmark for site-expressive Cabernet from the region. With a philosophy that blends Old World sensitivity to place with New World precision in the vineyard and cellar, Promontory has garnered critical acclaim and a devoted following worldwide, cementing its status as one of Napa’s most collectible and intellectually compelling producers.
