Description
Promontory 2017 is one of Napa Valley’s most compelling expressions of mountain Cabernet, crafted from a dramatic, rocky landscape on the western hills of Oakville. This is a wine of depth and precision, where power is seamlessly woven into grace and refinement. Highly acclaimed by critics, the 2017 vintage stands out for its energy, purity of fruit, and its unmistakable sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Promontory 2017 shows a deep, opaque garnet to granat-lilac hue, with a vivid rim that hints at both youth and concentration. The nose is wonderfully expressive and layered: aromas of baked blackberry, plum compote and blackcurrant pastille are lifted by notes of star anise, violet, espresso, and tilled earth. Subtle hints of graphite, cedar and warm stones emerge with air, adding complexity.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, polished and finely sculpted. The black fruit core is dense yet vibrant, framed by impeccably managed, grainy tannins that feel firm but never austere. Flavors of ripe blackberries, dark plum, cassis, and cocoa unfold into nuances of licorice, roasted coffee bean and savory earth. The finish is long, earthy and remarkably energetic, with a lingering mineral tension that speaks to its hillside origin. While already harmonious and inviting, this 2017 Promontory has the structure and freshness to age gracefully for 15–25 years or more under proper cellaring.
Production
Promontory is sourced from a wild, untamed parcel of land on the rugged western hills of Oakville in Napa Valley, where volcanic and sedimentary soils, steep slopes and varied exposures create a complex patchwork of terroirs. The vines are farmed with meticulous attention, with harvesting typically done by hand in small picks to ensure optimal ripeness block by block. In the cellar, fruit is carefully sorted before fermentation, often in a combination of oak and neutral vessels to preserve purity and detail. The wine is then aged for an extended period in carefully selected barrels and large-format oak, allowing the tannins to integrate slowly while maintaining freshness and a clear expression of the site, resulting in a Cabernet-based wine of precision, depth and longevity.
Food & Serving
Promontory 2017 shines alongside refined, boldly flavored dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, venison loin, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragù, or hard, aged cheeses like Comté, Parmigiano-Reggiano, or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. For current drinking, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the wine to fully open; as it matures, a shorter decant of about an hour will help lift the bouquet and soften the structure.
Producer
Promontory is the visionary project of the Harlan family, the same pioneering family behind some of Napa Valley’s most sought-after wines. Discovered in the 1980s as a wild, largely unexplored hillside just beyond the traditional bounds of Oakville, the Promontory estate was gradually developed into a singular vineyard dedicated to expressing this dramatic landscape. Today, Promontory is regarded as one of Napa’s most distinctive properties, known for its profound, ageworthy red wines that emphasize tension, minerality and a strong sense of place rather than sheer opulence. Critical acclaim and limited production have cemented its reputation as a benchmark in the region’s modern fine-wine narrative.
