Description

Produttori del Barbaresco’s Rio Sordo Riserva 2019 is a powerful, single-vineyard expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most admired crus. In this vintage, Rio Sordo shows a deeper, darker personality than usual, with impressive concentration and a sense of coiled energy that promises a long life ahead. This Riserva captures the classic structure of Barbaresco while highlighting the unique character of Rio Sordo’s warm, calcareous slopes, a site that has been celebrated for its wines since the mid-20th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Rio Sordo Riserva presents a deep garnet-ruby hue with a translucent rim, typical of high-quality Nebbiolo but with a notably saturated core for Barbaresco. The nose opens with dark cherry and black raspberry, followed by rose petal, violet, licorice, and subtle notes of tobacco, sweet spices, and iron-tinged earth. As it unfurls, hints of balsamic, dried herbs, and a touch of tar emerge, underscoring the wine’s seriousness and depth. On the palate, this is a particularly muscular Rio Sordo, with concentrated dark fruit, firm tannic grip, and a vivid, mouthwatering acidity that drives the wine through a long, mineral finish. Flavors of ripe morello cherry, black plum skin, blood orange, and dried red flowers are layered with notes of cocoa, leather, and savory spice. The wine’s energy currently feels directed inward, with the structure sitting prominently over the fruit, suggesting that patience will be handsomely rewarded. This 2019 has excellent aging potential and should evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more, gradually gaining finesse, complexity, and aromatic lift.

Production
Rio Sordo is a historic Barbaresco cru characterized by calcareous-clay and marl soils with good drainage, lying on relatively warm, gently sloping hills that encourage full ripening of Nebbiolo while preserving aromatic precision. Grapes for the Riserva are typically harvested by hand, allowing careful selection of perfectly mature clusters from old vines. In the cellar, Produttori del Barbaresco follows a traditional, minimal-intervention approach: extended maceration on the skins to extract aromatics, tannin, and structure, followed by long aging in large neutral oak botti. This classic vinification highlights Nebbiolo’s purity and the Rio Sordo vineyard’s distinctive depth rather than imposing overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is best matched with rich, savory dishes that can complement its tannic structure and layered complexity: braised veal or beef, ossobuco, lamb shank, game birds, truffle risotto, mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromas and texture to fully express themselves. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is highly recommended to help the tight, inward energy open up; as the wine matures, a shorter decant or careful service from bottle will be sufficient.

Producer
Founded in 1958, Produttori del Barbaresco is one of Italy’s most respected cooperatives and a benchmark producer for the Barbaresco denomination. Bringing together a group of dedicated small growers, the estate has been instrumental in elevating Barbaresco’s reputation worldwide by rigorously focusing on quality and terroir expression. Their range of single-vineyard Riservas from top crus—such as Rio Sordo, Rabajà, and Asili—has become a reference point for collectors and enthusiasts, regularly earning high critical acclaim and helping to define what classic, ageworthy Barbaresco should taste like.
