In the glass, the 2019 Ovello Riserva is a deep, vibrant garnet with a translucent rim that hints at its finesse and youthful energy. The nose opens slowly, even a touch reserved at first, then unfolds with lifted aromas of wild cherry, redcurrant, blood orange zest, dried rose petals, anise, crushed stone and hints of leather and sweet tobacco. Subtle notes of licorice, iron and savory herbs underscore its mineral, saline edge. On the palate, this is taut, linear and firmly structured, very much in the classic Ovello style. The fruit profile leans toward bright red berries and sour cherry, framed by citrus peel, tar, spice and a distinctive salty, almost ferrous finish that stretches long across the palate. The tannins are compact, finely grained and authoritative, currently holding the wine in a tight grip but backed by ample, pure fruit that promises superb evolution. Production
Ovello is one of Barbaresco’s coolest and highest-lying crus, with south and southwest exposures on steep hills composed of calcareous marl and sandy clay that lend both aromatic lift and a marked mineral backbone. Produttori del Barbaresco sources fruit from member growers who farm these vineyards using careful, sustainable practices and perform a strict green harvest to limit yields and enhance concentration. The Nebbiolo grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously, and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks with extended maceration to extract color, tannin and aromatics. The wine is then aged traditionally in large Slavonian oak botti for several years to preserve Nebbiolo’s purity and transparency, followed by additional bottle aging before release, with the magnum format further supporting a slower, more graceful maturation.
