Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Montestefano Riserva 2017 shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged edges, a classic hue for traditionally made Nebbiolo. The nose opens with dark red cherries, dried raspberry and plum, layered with rose petal, violet, sweet tobacco, and hints of licorice, leather and spice. Notes of crushed rock and mineral underscore its serious, terroir-driven character. On the palate, this is a broad-shouldered and firmly structured Barbaresco, with a notably dense, almost thick texture that blankets the mouth. Ripe red and black fruits intertwine with dried herbs, tar, and a pronounced mineral streak, supported by abundant yet refined tannins and vibrant acidity. The 15% alcohol is well integrated, adding warmth without overwhelming the balance. The finish is long, dry and persistent, leaving impressions of cherry skin, spice and crushed stone. In magnum, this 2017 has excellent aging potential and should continue to develop complexity over 15–25 years or more, gaining tertiary notes of truffle, dried flowers and forest floor.

Production
Montestefano is one of Barbaresco’s most revered crus, a south- to southwest-facing hillside with calcareous clay and marl soils that give wines of notable body, depth and structure. Nebbiolo grapes are harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters make it into the Riserva cuvée. In keeping with Produttori del Barbaresco’s traditional philosophy, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in large Slavonian oak casks (botti) for several years, followed by further refinement in bottle before release, allowing the firm tannic backbone of Montestefano to knit together and the cru’s distinctive character to emerge with clarity.

Food & Serving
This robust and structured Barbaresco calls for equally flavorful, protein-rich dishes. It pairs beautifully with braised veal shank (ossobuco), slow-cooked lamb, roasted game, aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino, and rich mushroom dishes featuring porcini or truffles. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold fully; older bottles will need a more gentle, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.
