Description
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the most celebrated estates in the Médoc, earning its place as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Bordeaux classification. This magnum release from the outstanding 2021 vintage combines Saint-Julien elegance with serious structure, offering both immediate appeal and exceptional long-term cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
Deep, dark ruby in the glass, this wine shows impressive concentration and purity. The nose opens with ripe blackberries and blackcurrants, layered with crushed stones, graphite, cedar, and warm spice, giving it a classic Bordeaux profile with real depth.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, muscular, and tightly focused, yet refined and balanced rather than heavy. The tannins are firm and polished, supporting a long finish that promises excellent evolution in bottle. In a great cellar, it can age beautifully for decades, and in magnum format it will develop especially slowly and gracefully.
Production
Located in the heart of Saint-Julien, Château Léoville Poyferré spans around 95 hectares of prime Médoc terroir, planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s gravelly soils and maritime-influenced climate are ideal for producing wines with structure, freshness, and aromatic precision. Careful harvesting and meticulous vinification are used to preserve the purity of fruit and the elegance that define the château’s style.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for grilled ribeye, lamb, duck breast, game, or rich mushroom dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and for a young bottle, decant for several hours to let the wine fully раскры its aromatic complexity and structure.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré has been under the stewardship of the Cuvelier family since 1920 and is today regarded as one of Saint-Julien’s benchmark estates. Its reputation rests on consistency, finesse, and the ability to produce wines of remarkable depth and longevity. As one of the Médoc’s historic classified growths, it continues to attract collectors and Bordeaux enthusiasts around the world.
