Description
Pontet-Canet 2021 is a standout Pauillac that combines the pedigree of a Fifth Growth with a modern, highly expressive style. Known for its depth, precision and organic/biodynamic approach in the vineyard, it captures both the power of Bordeaux’s Left Bank and the freshness of a cooler vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby-purple colour with a vibrant edge. The nose is poised and layered, with classic Pauillac notes of blackcurrant, graphite, cedar, cigar box and subtle floral and spice tones.
On the palate, expect a wine with impressive structure, fine-grained tannins and a core of dark berry fruit framed by mineral lift and fresh acidity. The 2021 vintage generally leans toward elegance and purity rather than sheer volume, giving the wine excellent balance and strong potential to evolve beautifully over the next 15–25 years, likely longer in a good cellar.
Production
Pontet-Canet is located in the heart of Pauillac, on gravel-rich soils that drain well and encourage deep root growth, contributing to the wine’s concentration and freshness. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, with careful hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting to preserve fruit quality. Vinification is carried out with a focus on minimal intervention and precision, allowing the character of the vintage and terroir to shine through.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, ribeye, duck breast and game dishes such as venison. It also works well with earthy sides like wild mushrooms, truffle potatoes or lentils. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the wine open up and soften its tannins.
Producer
Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac’s most respected estates and was classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Under the Tesseron family, the château has earned widespread acclaim for its biodynamic conversion and consistently high-quality wines that often outperform expectations for the classification. It has become a benchmark for combining tradition, innovation and authenticity in Bordeaux.
