Description
Pontet-Canet 2010 is a standout Pauillac that combines the structure and power expected from a Fifth Growth with the finesse and purity that have made the château one of Bordeaux’s most admired names. Built on a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it represents the exceptional 2010 vintage at its most precise and age-worthy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet core with a refined, almost understated brightness at the rim. The nose is layered and complex, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, then unfolding into cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, violets and subtle spice.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and tightly woven, with ripe dark fruit framed by firm but polished tannins and a vibrant line of freshness. Notes of cassis, crushed stone, pencil shavings and earthy nuance lead to a long, authoritative finish. This is a wine built for the cellar and should continue to develop beautifully for many years, gaining more tertiary complexity over time.
Production
Pontet-Canet is based in Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils and excellent drainage favor Cabernet Sauvignon, while clay and limestone elements help bring depth and balance to the blend. The grapes are typically harvested with great care, often by hand, and vinification is focused on preserving fruit purity, structure and site expression. The estate is known for a more natural approach to winemaking in recent years, with meticulous parcel selection and élevage designed to enhance precision and longevity.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck breast and richly flavored mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with hard, aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if opening now, as this will help reveal its full aromatic depth and soften the tannins.
Producer
Château Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac’s most respected estates and has built a strong reputation for quality, consistency and innovation. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has since become one of the benchmark properties of the appellation, thanks in part to the vision of the Tesseron family. The château is widely recognized for elevating its style through thoughtful viticulture and careful cellar work, earning acclaim among collectors and critics alike.
