Description

Pontet Canet 2020 is a classic Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most talked‑about châteaux, known both for its pioneering biodynamic approach and its powerful, ageworthy wines. This vintage marries dark, generous fruit with the firm structure typical of the Left Bank, offering a serious, cellar‑worthy red for collectors and enthusiasts. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855 but often punching above its rank, Pontet Canet has long been considered one of the appellation’s overachievers, with a loyal following among Bordeaux lovers worldwide.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pontet Canet 2020 shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple hue, with intense concentration at the core and a vibrant rim that hints at its youth. The nose opens with ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum compote, followed by notes of sweet berries, violet, licorice and a touch of graphite and cedar, layered over subtle hints of spice and earth. On the palate, this is a medium‑ to full‑bodied Pauillac with firm, assertive tannins and a compact, tightly wound core of black fruit. Flavors of cassis, dark cherry and damson are framed by licorice, cocoa, dried herbs and a distinctly earthy, mineral edge. The structure is serious and somewhat austere at this stage, with tannins that currently dominate the finish but promise to soften with time in bottle. While approachable for those who enjoy a more powerful, traditional style of Bordeaux, this wine is clearly built for aging and should gain in harmony, texture and complexity over the next 10–20 years, and potentially beyond in good cellaring conditions.

Production
Pontet Canet is located in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde, facing some of the most illustrious properties in Bordeaux. Its vineyards rest on deep gravel soils over clay and limestone, an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon, which forms the backbone of the blend alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate is a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the Médoc, working the soils by horse in many parcels, using organic preparations and focusing on biodiversity to encourage vine health. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification takes place in a mix of traditional vats and more modern vessels, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and structure. The wine is then aged in a combination of French oak barrels (a portion new) and larger vessels, allowing the character of the terroir and vintage to express itself without overwhelming oak influence.

Food & Serving
This robust Pauillac calls for equally flavorful, structured dishes. Think classic roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry‑aged ribeye or Côte de Boeuf, duck breast with a red‑wine reduction, or slow‑braised beef and game stews. It also works beautifully with mushroom‑based dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Manchego or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and complexity, and decant generously—at least 1–2 hours for younger bottles—to help soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open fully. For more mature bottles down the line, a shorter, gentle decant will suffice primarily to separate the wine from any sediment.

Producer
Château Pontet Canet, situated in Pauillac in the heart of the Médoc, dates back to the early 18th century and was classified as a Cinquième Cru (Fifth Growth) in the historic 1855 classification. Under the stewardship of the Tesseron family since the late 20th century, the estate has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming one of Bordeaux’s flagship properties for organic and biodynamic viticulture. Its shift to horse‑ploughed vineyards and low‑intervention farming was groundbreaking in the region, influencing many neighboring châteaux. Pontet Canet is widely regarded as an estate that often outperforms its original classification, with several vintages receiving top critical acclaim and cementing its reputation as a benchmark Pauillac that combines power, finesse and a strong sense of place.
