Description
Pontet Canet 2018 in magnum (1.5 L) is a powerful yet seductive Pauillac that beautifully captures the generous, sunshine-filled character of the vintage while remaining impeccably poised. This is a modern-classic Bordeaux: opulent fruit, refined structure, and a sense of energy that makes it compelling both now and for decades to come. Bottled in magnum for slower, more graceful evolution, it’s a superb choice for collectors and special occasions alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Pontet Canet shows a deep, opaque granat‑purple hue that clings to the sides, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is intensely expressive and aromatic, with explosive notes of raspberry tart, blackcurrant pastilles and ripe cassis, layered with rose oil, Chinese five-spice, cinnamon stick, and hints of pencil shavings, dusty earth and wild scrub.
On the palate, this is rich, voluptuous and full-bodied, a true hedonist’s Pauillac with layer upon layer of black and red berry jam, lifted by exotic spice and floral tones. The texture is beautifully judged: firmly structured yet plush and velvety, with plenty of freshness providing lift and precision through a long, fireworks-like finish of spices and dark fruit. Already remarkably alluring in its youth, this wine has the backbone and balance to age gracefully for three decades or more, especially in magnum format.
Production
The 2018 Pontet Canet is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, sourced from the estate’s biodynamically farmed vineyards in the gravelly soils of Pauillac in Bordeaux. The terroir—deep gravel over limestone and clay—naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon, delivering intensity, structure and aromatic complexity. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting to ensure only pristine fruit is used. The wine is then vinified with a focus on purity and finesse, followed by maturation in a sophisticated regime: 55% in French oak barrels and 45% in amphorae. This combination of traditional oak and amphora allows Pontet Canet to marry classic Pauillac depth and structure with a remarkable clarity of fruit and textural elegance.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Pontet Canet is a natural partner for rich, refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison, or slow-braised beef short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, mushroom-based sauces, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting is strongly recommended—allow at least 1–2 hours in its youth, and even longer if enjoyed in the next decade—to let the dense fruit and spice notes unfurl and the tannins soften to a luxurious, velvety texture.
Producer
Château Pontet Canet is one of Pauillac’s most respected estates, classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification but widely regarded today as punching well above its official rank. Under the stewardship of the Tesseron family, Pontet Canet has become a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the Médoc, leading the way in sustainable, terroir-driven winemaking. The estate is known for its meticulous vineyard work, its use of horses in the vineyards, and its innovative use of amphorae alongside traditional oak in the cellar. Over the past two decades, Pontet Canet has earned a reputation for producing consistently outstanding wines that rival many higher-classified neighbors, cementing its status as one of the star properties of modern Bordeaux.
