Description

Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2013 in magnum format is one of Champagne’s most revered prestige cuvées, crafted as a tribute to the house’s most famous admirer. This vintage delivers both power and finesse, echoing the great wines Churchill himself favored: structured, complex and built to age. The 2013 stands in stylistic contrast to the richer 2012, offering a fresher, more chiselled profile while remaining on the same lofty qualitative level.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Sir Winston Churchill shows a luminous, fine golden hue, animated by an elegant and persistent stream of tiny bubbles. The nose opens with precise, cool notes of orchard fruit – crisp yellow apple and ripe pear – followed by mandarin oil, fresh brioche, pastry cream and a touch of roasted nuts, all wrapped in a subtle, chalky minerality. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a vinous, layered texture and impressive concentration that never feels heavy. The attack is pure and focused, showing ripe stone and orchard fruits, citrus zest and a refined autolytic character reminiscent of warm bread and patisserie. A vibrant spine of acidity runs through the wine, lending freshness and tension to its generous mid-palate, while the finish is long, precise and mouthwatering. In magnum, the 2013 has excellent aging potential; it is already surprisingly accessible and charming now, but will continue to gain in complexity and harmony over the next 10–20 years or more.

Production
Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is sourced from Pol Roger’s finest, predominantly Grand Cru vineyards, planted mainly to Pinot Noir with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, though the exact blend remains a closely guarded house secret. The fruit comes from older vines rooted in the classic chalk and limestone soils of Champagne, which lend both finesse and backbone. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure pristine bunch selection. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve clarity and precision, with full malolactic conversion for added texture and balance. The wine then spends an extended period aging on its lees in Pol Roger’s famously deep, cool cellars, developing its hallmark complexity and fine mousse before being disgorged at a dosage carefully judged to underline, rather than mask, the character of the vintage.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne that shines at the table. Pair it with refined dishes such as butter-poached turbot, scallops with a light citrus or beurre blanc sauce, roasted guinea fowl, veal sweetbreads, or mature but not overly pungent cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. It also works beautifully with luxurious canapés featuring caviar, lobster or truffle. Serve well chilled, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F). Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving – and pouring into proper tulip-shaped Champagne glasses – will allow the bouquet to unfold fully, especially from magnum.

Producer
Founded in 1849 in Épernay, Pol Roger remains one of the few great Champagne houses that is still family-owned and fiercely independent. Long admired in Britain and across the world, the house became particularly renowned through its close association with Sir Winston Churchill, who considered Pol Roger his preferred Champagne and whose name now graces its flagship cuvée. Pol Roger is celebrated for its impeccably balanced, elegant yet structured style, underpinned by meticulous vineyard sourcing and long lees aging. Consistently praised by critics and collectors alike, the house holds a key position among the top-tier producers of Champagne, with Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill regarded as one of the region’s benchmark prestige bottlings.
