Description
Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is a benchmark-style Brunello made from 100% Sangiovese in the prized Castelnuovo dell’Abate area of Montalcino. Crafted organically with meticulous vineyard selection and long aging in large oak, it reflects both the purity and structure that have made Brunello one of Italy’s most celebrated wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red color with delicate garnet reflections. The nose is intense and layered, offering a refined mix of dark cherry, red berries, dried herbs, spice, and an ethereal mineral lift that adds complexity and elegance.
On the palate, it is robust yet beautifully balanced, with firm tannins, vibrant acidity, and a strong structural backbone. The finish is long, savory, and harmonious, suggesting excellent aging potential over the next 10–20 years, and likely even longer in a good cellar.
Production
The wine comes from carefully chosen south-facing sites in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, where the combination of exposure, altitude, and microclimate helps Sangiovese reach full ripeness while retaining freshness. Grapes are hand-harvested, placed in perforated crates, and undergo a second sorting in the cellar before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. After around 20 days of maceration, the wine matures for about four years in 25–30 hl oak casks and is bottled unfiltered to preserve its authenticity and depth.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for rich Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef, game, roasted lamb, and mushroom-based pasta or risotto. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours to let the wine open fully and soften its tannins.
Producer
Poggio di Sotto has become one of Montalcino’s most respected estates, known for its uncompromising focus on terroir expression, organic farming, and elegant, long-lived Brunello. The winery’s reputation is built on precision in the vineyard and a traditional approach in the cellar, resulting in wines that are widely admired for their finesse, structure, and aging potential.
