Description

Poggio Argentiera Ciliegiolo 2024 is a bright, expressive Tuscan red that showcases the pure, juicy charm of this historic local grape. Crafted for immediate pleasure rather than heavy contemplation, it offers a fresh, vibrant alternative to more structured Sangiovese-based wines. This bottling highlights Ciliegiolo’s long-standing role in the Maremma, bringing a once-supporting variety into the spotlight with a clean, contemporary style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Ciliegiolo shows a luminous ruby-red color with youthful violet reflections, hinting at its freshness and energy. The nose is fragrant and inviting, with notes of ripe cherries and wild strawberries layered with red currants, a touch of pomegranate, and delicate floral tones of rose and violet. Subtle hints of Mediterranean herbs and a faint spice edge add complexity without weighing it down. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, juicy, and wonderfully drinkable, with soft, round tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps each sip refreshing. Crunchy red fruit flavors dominate, backed by gentle notes of sweet spice and a faint savory, saline touch from the coastal influence. The finish is clean and precise, with lingering cherry and herbal nuances. This 2024 vintage is designed to be enjoyed young, within the first 3–5 years, when its bright fruit and vibrant character are at their peak.

Production
Poggio Argentiera is based in the coastal Maremma zone of Toscana, where vineyards benefit from a combination of maritime breezes, sandy and alluvial soils, and strong sunlight that favors healthy, aromatic grapes. The Ciliegiolo vines are typically farmed with great respect for the environment, with a focus on low yields and careful canopy management to preserve balance and freshness. Harvest is carried out at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to ensure only the best bunches make it to the cellar. In the winery, the grapes are gently destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve the grape’s pure, floral-fruited profile. Maceration is kept moderate to extract color and soft tannins without heaviness, and aging is usually in stainless steel or neutral vessels to emphasize freshness and varietal character over oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Ciliegiolo is a versatile table wine that shines alongside a wide range of Tuscan and Mediterranean dishes. It pairs beautifully with classic tomato-based pastas, pizza with cured meats, grilled sausages, roast chicken, charcuterie, and semi-aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano. Its bright acidity and gentle tannins also make it a good match for grilled vegetables, mushroom dishes, and lighter pork preparations. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatics; a brief 20–30 minute opening in the glass or carafe is sufficient, as extended decanting is not necessary for such a youthful, fruit-forward wine.

Producer
Founded in the late 1990s, Poggio Argentiera has become one of the reference estates in the coastal Maremma area of Tuscany, an emerging zone known for its sunny climate, breezy vineyards, and expressive, Mediterranean-style wines. The estate was created with the goal of showcasing the character of Maremma through both international and native varieties, with a particular emphasis on environmentally respectful vineyard practices and clear, terroir-driven expressions. Over the years, Poggio Argentiera has gained recognition for its work with indigenous grapes like Ciliegiolo and Vermentino, helping to elevate the reputation of Maremma from a lesser-known coastal district to one of Tuscany’s most dynamic and sought-after regions.
