Description
Poggio Argentiera Cabernet Franc Poggioraso 2021 is a refined expression of coastal Tuscan Cabernet Franc, balancing ripe Mediterranean fruit with a distinctly savory backbone. Crafted in limited quantities, it showcases how this Bordeaux variety can achieve elegance, freshness and depth in the warm, sea-breezed vineyards of Maremma. The Poggioraso bottling has become a reference point for Tuscan Cabernet Franc lovers, highlighting the grape’s potential beyond its traditional French homeland.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Poggioraso 2021 shows a deep ruby color with bright violet reflections, signaling both concentration and vibrancy. The nose opens with pure red and black fruits—think wild blackberry, black cherry and plum—layered with graphite, dried herbs, sweet tobacco and a touch of green peppercorn, all lifted by subtle floral notes of violet.
On the palate, this Cabernet Franc is medium to full-bodied, with finely etched tannins and a juicy, refreshing acidity that keeps it remarkably drinkable. Flavors of dark berries, cassis and ripe cherry are interwoven with hints of sage, rosemary, cedar and a gentle spice from time in oak. The finish is long and precise, with a savory, almost mineral edge that invites another sip. While already approachable in its youth, the structure and balance suggest a very good aging potential of 8–12 years from the vintage, during which the tannins will soften and the tertiary notes of leather and undergrowth will evolve further.
Production
Poggioraso is sourced from Poggio Argentiera’s estate vineyards in coastal Maremma, southern Tuscany, where sandy and alluvial soils with patches of clay and gravel, combined with constant sea breezes, create ideal conditions for Cabernet Franc: warm days for ripeness and cool nights for aromatic precision. The vines are farmed with a strong focus on sustainability and minimal intervention, with careful canopy management and low yields to maximize concentration and purity. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal physiological ripeness, sorted meticulously and gently destemmed. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks using selected or indigenous yeasts, with regular pump-overs or punch-downs to extract color and fine tannins without harshness. The wine is then aged in a combination of French oak barrels (often a mix of new and used) to add texture and complexity while preserving the grape’s varietal character and natural freshness before final blending and bottling.
Food & Serving
Poggio Argentiera Cabernet Franc Poggioraso 2021 is an excellent partner for richly flavored yet refined dishes: think Tuscan-style grilled steak (bistecca alla fiorentina), lamb chops with rosemary, slow-braised beef, game birds, or hearty pasta with wild boar ragù. It also complements aged cheeses, roasted root vegetables, and mushroom-based dishes that echo its earthy nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and balanced structure. Decanting for about 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in the wine’s first 3–5 years, to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to integrate.
Producer
Poggio Argentiera was founded in the late 1990s in Maremma, a once-rugged coastal area of southern Tuscany that has rapidly become one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions. From the outset, the estate focused on expressing the unique character of its maritime terroir through careful vineyard work and a strong commitment to sustainable, often organic-leaning practices. Poggio Argentiera helped put Maremma on the quality map with wines that combine Mediterranean warmth, freshness and typicity, both from indigenous grapes and selected international varieties like Cabernet Franc. Today, the winery is recognized as a key player in the region’s modern renaissance, consistently earning critical praise and a loyal following among wine enthusiasts seeking distinctive Tuscan wines with personality and a strong sense of place.
