Description

Poggialti Pecorino Terre di Chieti 2022 is a bright, expressive white wine from Abruzzo that showcases just how characterful the Pecorino grape can be. Crafted by Area 6, it offers a vibrant balance of citrus, herbs and minerality that makes it both refreshing and surprisingly complex. As one of central Italy’s most interesting native white varieties, Pecorino has seen a remarkable rediscovery in recent decades, and this bottling captures that modern renaissance in a clean, contemporary style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pecorino shows a pale straw-yellow color with greenish reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is lifted and aromatic, with notes of lemon zest, white peach and green apple layered over hints of wild herbs, chamomile and a subtle saline breeze. On the palate, Poggialti Pecorino is dry, medium-bodied and vividly structured, with lively acidity that keeps everything taut and refreshing. Flavors of citrus, crunchy orchard fruits and a touch of pear are framed by a distinct mineral backbone and a gentle almond-like finish typical of the grape. It is very drinkable now for its purity and energy, but has the structure to evolve over the next 2–3 years, gaining a bit more texture and complexity while retaining its freshness.

Production
Sourced from vineyards in Terre di Chieti in Abruzzo, the grapes benefit from a classic Adriatic-influenced climate: warm days, cooler nights and breezes from the sea that help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. The Pecorino is typically harvested in the cooler hours to protect its delicate aromatics and natural freshness. In the cellar, gentle pressing and cool fermentation in stainless steel are used to highlight the grape’s citrusy, herbal character and crisp profile, with maturation on fine lees for a short period to add a touch of texture and roundness without sacrificing liveliness.

Food & Serving
This Pecorino is a natural match for seafood: think grilled prawns, calamari, clams, mussels or simply prepared white fish with lemon and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with fresh goat cheese, light pasta dishes with vegetables, fritto misto, sushi, and salads featuring fennel or citrus. Serve well-chilled at about 8–10°C to emphasize its brightness and minerality; a quick 15–20 minutes in the fridge before serving is ideal. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring it into a slightly larger white wine glass will help open up its delicate aromatics.

Producer
Area 6 is a modern Abruzzo-based project focused on expressing the character of native Italian grapes through clean, approachable wines. Working within the Terre di Chieti IGT, the estate highlights varieties such as Pecorino that have helped redefine the region’s reputation for high-quality, distinctive whites. While information on the winery’s detailed history is limited, their style leans toward fresh, fruit-forward and terroir-driven wines that reflect the coastal influence and hillside landscapes of Abruzzo, contributing to the region’s growing appeal among curious wine drinkers and Italian wine enthusiasts alike.
