Description
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco 2018 is a single-vineyard Barolo from one of Monforte d’Alba’s most revered crus in Bussia. This is an elegant, medium-bodied expression that shows a touch more early evolution than many young Barolos, making it especially attractive for those who prefer Barolo with some developed complexity without a very long wait. Romirasco has long been considered one of Aldo Conterno’s flagship vineyards, celebrated for its combination of power, perfume and fine structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Romirasco shows a deep, luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges that hint at its early evolution. The nose is expressive and layered, with dark cherries and dried red fruits interwoven with notes of roasted coffee, leather, tobacco smoke, warm spice and dried flowers, all pointing to a wine that is opening up sooner than usual.
On the palate, this Barolo is medium-bodied and refined rather than massive, with a forward, approachable character. Flavours of dark cherry and plum are framed by savoury tones of coffee bean, leather, licorice, tar, spice and dried rose petals. The tannins are firm but polished, and the acidity keeps everything lifted and fresh. Given how much tertiary complexity is already on display, this vintage is best enjoyed over the near to medium term rather than held for decades, offering its peak charm within the first 10–12 years from the vintage.
Production
Romirasco is a prime parcel within the Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, where Nebbiolo vines grow on steep slopes of calcareous marl and sandstone at relatively high altitude, benefiting from excellent drainage, wide diurnal temperature swings and long, even ripening. The fruit is typically hand-harvested in small crates to preserve berry integrity, then carefully sorted in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel with extended maceration on the skins to extract colour, aromatics and the fine but firm tannic backbone that defines Barolo. The wine is then aged traditionally in large Slavonian oak casks for several years, allowing slow oxygen exchange and integration of structure without overt oak flavour, before further bottle aging prior to release.
Food & Serving
Pair Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco 2018 with rich, savoury dishes that can stand up to its structure and complex aromatics: braised beef or veal shank (osso buco), slow-cooked lamb, game birds, truffle-infused risotto, tagliatelle with ragù, or mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and aged Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both its fruit and its more evolved, savoury nuances. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the aromas to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften, especially in its younger years.
Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the benchmark estates of Barolo, based in Monforte d’Alba and renowned for marrying traditional Barolo craftsmanship with a meticulous, quality-driven approach. Founded by Aldo Conterno in the late 1960s after he left his family’s Giacomo Conterno estate, the winery quickly gained an international reputation for its single-vineyard Barolos from top Bussia crus such as Romirasco, Cicala and Colonnello. Today, the Conterno family continues Aldo’s legacy, crafting wines that are deeply rooted in Monforte’s terroir—structured, ageworthy and complex—while consistently earning high critical acclaim and a place among the most sought-after Barolos of the region.
