Description

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco 2017 in magnum format is a commanding, age-worthy Barolo from one of Bussia’s most revered crus. This is the densest and most powerful of Aldo Conterno’s single-vineyard Barolo releases in 2017, built on depth, structure and remarkable longevity. Sourced from the historic Romirasco vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, it captures the darker, more muscular side of Nebbiolo while remaining impeccably refined.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Romirasco shows a deep garnet hue with a vibrant, translucent core, typical of serious Barolo yet notably dark for Nebbiolo. The nose is intense and layered: black cherry, macerated plum and wild berries unfold alongside rose petals, licorice, tobacco, dark spices and a graphite-like mineral edge. Subtle notes of roasted coffee, cedar and sweet spice reflect its élevage in oak, without ever overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, broad-shouldered and firmly structured, with tightly knit tannins that are authoritative yet finely grained. Flavors of black cherry, bitter orange peel, dried herbs and star anise mingle with cocoa, leather and a savory, ferrous minerality. The finish is long, dry and resonant, with a lingering echo of dark fruit and spice. In magnum, this Barolo is built for the long haul: it will benefit greatly from at least 8–10 years of additional cellaring and has the potential to evolve gracefully for 20+ years, gaining complexity, silkier texture and tertiary notes of truffle and forest floor.

Production
Romirasco is a high, steep parcel within the Bussia cru of Monforte d’Alba, renowned for its calcareous clay and marl soils that give Barolo both power and minerality. The vines here enjoy excellent exposure and significant diurnal range, contributing to slow, even ripening and thick-skinned Nebbiolo grapes packed with tannin and aroma. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels with an extended maceration to extract color, tannin and nuance from the skins, followed by long aging in large oak casks (botti) and/or carefully chosen barrels. This traditional-yet-refined approach preserves Romirasco’s distinctive character: depth, structure and a profound sense of place.

Food & Serving
This is a Barolo for robust, richly flavored dishes: think braised beef or veal shank, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, porcini risotto, truffle-infused dishes and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with Piedmontese classics like brasato al Barolo and tajarin with ragù. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and structure, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended in the near term, especially from magnum, to allow the tannins to relax and the aromatic complexity to fully emerge.

Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of Barolo’s benchmark estates, founded by Aldo Conterno in 1969 after he left his family’s Giacomo Conterno winery to pursue his own vision in Bussia, Monforte d’Alba. Often referred to as the “King of Bussia,” Aldo established a style that marries traditional Barolo structure with a polished, expressive fruit profile, helping to define modern expectations of top-quality Nebbiolo from this part of Piedmont. Today the estate is run by Aldo’s sons, who farm some of the finest parcels in Bussia—Cicala, Colonnello and Romirasco among them—and continue to earn high critical acclaim for their age-worthy, terroir-driven Barolos that stand among the most sought-after wines in the region.
