Description
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco 2017 is a commanding expression of Barolo from one of Bussia’s most prized crus. This is a Barolo built on power and depth, with dark fruit, firm structure and a classic, ageworthy profile that will reward patience in the cellar. Sourced from the famed Romirasco vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, it reflects both the prestige of the site and the traditional craftsmanship of one of Piedmont’s benchmark producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Romirasco shows a deep, concentrated garnet hue with brick-red reflections at the rim, typical of serious Nebbiolo. The nose opens with intense aromas of black cherry, dark plum and dried rose petals, layered with licorice, tobacco, tar and notes of roasted and sweet spice from carefully judged oak. With air, more complexity emerges: hints of leather, cocoa, sandalwood and a subtle balsamic lift.
On the palate, this Barolo is full-bodied and muscular, with broad shoulders and a tightly knit tannic frame. Dark berries and blackcurrant are wrapped in tones of spice, cedar, toasted oak and earthy minerality, giving the wine a serious, almost brooding character in its youth. The acidity is vibrant yet well integrated, ensuring freshness behind the richness. This is a wine made for the long haul: while already impressive, it will soften, gain polish and reveal greater nuance with extended cellaring, developing more truffle, dried herb and tertiary complexity over 10–20+ years.
Production
Romirasco is a high-quality parcel within the Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, known for its calcareous clay and marl soils that give Nebbiolo both power and finesse. The vines sit on well-exposed slopes, benefiting from excellent sun exposure and significant diurnal temperature swings, which help preserve aromatic complexity and acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification follows a traditional Barolo approach: long maceration on the skins to extract structure and aromatics, followed by extended aging in large oak casks, allowing the wine to slowly integrate oak components while preserving the character of the vineyard and the Nebbiolo grape.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Barolo that shines alongside rich, savory dishes. Think braised beef, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, game birds, truffle risotto, or tajarin with ragù. Mature cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Pecorino or firm alpine cheeses also pair beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow the aromas to unfold. Decanting is strongly recommended for at least 2–3 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles can be decanted more gently and for a shorter time.
Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of Barolo’s most renowned estates, based in Monforte d’Alba at the heart of the Bussia cru. Founded by Aldo Conterno after he parted ways with his family’s Giacomo Conterno estate, the winery quickly gained a reputation for producing profound, long-lived Barolo that deftly balances tradition with a refined, modern touch in the cellar. Today, the estate is run by the next generation, who continue Aldo’s commitment to meticulous vineyard work and minimal intervention winemaking. Romirasco is among their flagship bottlings, regularly acclaimed by international critics and collectors as one of the finest and most ageworthy expressions of Bussia and of Barolo as a whole.
