Description
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia 2013 is one of Barolo’s true reference-point wines, released only in the finest vintages and always after a long, patient maturation in the cellar. This 2013 Riserva is a rare bottling, with just 3,000 bottles produced, and is drawn from select parcels within the historic Bussia cru. Combining profound elegance with classical structure, it captures Nebbiolo at its most refined and expressive, embodying the Granbussia story of purity, depth and age-worthy finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Granbussia shows a luminous garnet core with brick-orange hues at the rim, already hinting at its evolution and complexity. The nose is hauntingly aromatic and layered: notes of damp earth, autumn leaves and forest floor mingle with white truffle, dried rose petals and wild red berries. Subtle tones of anise seed, tar, licorice and sweet tobacco emerge with air, giving the bouquet an almost ethereal dimension.
On the palate, this is a precise and impeccably balanced Barolo: fine yet authoritative tannins frame a core of sour cherry, wild strawberry, and redcurrant, underscored by hints of herbal spice, black tea, and savory minerality. The texture is silky but structured, with vibrant acidity that carries the flavors long across the palate and into a resonant, persistent finish. Although already deeply expressive upon release, this wine is built for long-term aging; properly cellared, it has the potential to evolve beautifully for two to three more decades, gaining further tertiary notes of leather, dried mushroom and balsamic nuance.
Production
Granbussia is sourced from top plots within the famed Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, an area known for its calcareous marl soils, excellent drainage and south to southwest exposures that foster slow, even ripening of Nebbiolo. In 2013, a natural reduction of fruit during the growing season led to lower yields and a later-than-normal harvest, allowing for longer hang time and heightened aromatic complexity. Grapes from two key vineyards within the larger Bussia area were harvested by hand and co-fermented, rather than blended after malolactic fermentation, to achieve a seamless expression of site. Traditional vinification methods—extended maceration on the skins and aging in large oak casks—were employed, followed by many years of maturation in the cellar before this Riserva was released around nine years after harvest, in keeping with the estate’s philosophy of releasing Granbussia only when it reaches a certain level of harmony and readiness.
Food & Serving
This is a contemplative Barolo that shines with refined, deeply flavored dishes: classic pairings include braised beef cheek, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shank, or game such as venison and hare. It is also superb with dishes featuring truffle, porcini mushrooms, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, and other mature hard cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is strongly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the bouquet to fully open, and even longer if enjoyed in its youth, so that the tannins can soften and the wine’s intricate aromatic spectrum can unfold.
Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the most revered names in Barolo, founded by Aldo Conterno in the late 1960s after he departed from the family estate to pursue his own distinct vision. Based in Monforte d’Alba, the winery is particularly associated with the Bussia cru, where it owns some of the area’s most prized vineyards. Aldo Conterno became renowned for crafting Barolos that marry traditional structure with remarkable elegance and purity, a style that has earned the estate worldwide acclaim and a loyal following among collectors. Granbussia, the flagship Riserva, is produced only in the greatest vintages and in very limited quantities, and it has long been considered one of the benchmark wines of the region, consistently garnering top scores and cementing the estate’s status as a pillar of Piedmontese fine wine.
