Description

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia 2012 is one of Piedmont’s true benchmark wines, crafted only in the finest vintages and released after extended aging in the estate’s cellars. Sourced from the best parcels within the famed Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, this is Nebbiolo at its most profound, combining power, finesse and extraordinary longevity. Granbussia has long been a reference point for traditional-yet-refined Barolo, and the 2012 continues that legacy with a beautifully poised, classically styled wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Granbussia shows a deep garnet core with a brick-tinged rim, already hinting at its evolution and complexity. The nose is intensely perfumed and layered, with classic Barolo aromas of dried roses, violets and cherry, alongside notes of tar, liquorice, blood orange, dried herbs and a subtle balsamic lift. With air, darker nuances of leather, tobacco leaf, truffle and sweet spices emerge, offering remarkable aromatic depth. On the palate, this is structured yet supremely elegant, with finely woven tannins that are firm but polished. Flavours of sour cherry, wild strawberry and redcurrant are interlaced with notes of anise, earthy undergrowth, cedar and savory spice. The acidity is vibrant and linear, carrying the wine through a long, mineral-driven finish. While already complex and expressive, the 2012 Granbussia is built for the long haul and will continue to develop tertiary nuances—truffle, dried fruit, game and forest floor—over the next 20–30 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Granbussia is a meticulously assembled blend of the estate’s best Nebbiolo parcels within the Bussia cru of Monforte d’Alba, a site prized for its calcareous clay and marl soils and its southwest exposures that foster slow, even ripening. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal maturity, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification follows a resolutely traditional path: long macerations to extract character and structure, followed by extended aging—typically around 32 months—in large Slavonian oak botti, and then several additional years in bottle before release. The result is a Barolo Riserva that marries classic structure with exceptional refinement and harmony.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Riserva shines alongside rich, deeply flavored dishes, particularly traditional Piedmontese cuisine. Think braised beef or veal (brasato al Barolo), game birds, slow-cooked lamb shanks, and dishes with white truffle such as tajarin pasta or risotto. Mature hard cheeses like aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno also make superb partners. Serve at 16–18°C in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl. For a 2012, decanting 1.5–3 hours before serving is recommended to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the most revered names in Barolo, founded by Aldo Conterno in 1969 after he branched off from the family estate to pursue his own vision in Monforte d’Alba. Often referred to as the “King of Barolo” by aficionados, Aldo sought a balance between strict traditionalism and thoughtful innovation, focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard work and restrained, large-cask aging. The estate’s holdings in the Bussia cru are among the most prized vineyards in the region, and Granbussia stands as its flagship Barolo Riserva, produced only in outstanding vintages. Over the decades, Poderi Aldo Conterno has earned an international reputation for crafting some of the Langhe’s most profound and age-worthy Nebbiolo wines, consistently praised by top critics and collectors alike.
