Planeta Etna Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese 2021 is a striking expression of Etna’s volcanic character, made from vines rooted directly in the historic 1614 lava flow. Crafted from Nerello Mascalese with a small amount of Nerello Cappuccio, it captures the unique tension between volcanic power and elegance that has made Etna one of Italy’s most fascinating wine regions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this red shows a bright, refined colour typical of Nerello Mascalese, with a lively, transparent ruby tone. The nose is expressive and lifted, offering intense aromas of sour cherry, ripe cherry and a subtle beeswax note, supported by delicate earthy and mineral nuances. On the palate, it is elegant and finely structured, with fresh acidity, polished tannins and a cool, mineral-driven finish that reflects its volcanic origins. The wine has excellent balance and enough depth to develop gracefully over the next several years, gaining complexity and savoury detail with time.

Production
The vines are grown in the highlands of Etna on black volcanic soils formed by the legendary 1614 eruption, one of the longest in the volcano’s recorded history. This rugged terroir, combined with altitude and the cooling influence of the mountain climate, encourages freshness, aromatic precision and natural structure. After harvest, the wine is aged for around 14 months in 25 and 36 hl oak casks, which helps preserve the purity of the fruit while adding texture and refinement.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, grilled lamb, mushroom risotto, aubergine dishes and aged cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially if enjoyed young, to allow the wine’s aromatic layers and fine structure to open up fully.
