Description

Domaine Pierre Gelin’s Clos Napoleon is a structured, aromatic Pinot Noir from the Fixin Premier Cru appellation in Burgundy, made from old vines on clay-limestone soils. Its historic vineyard takes its name from Claude Noisot, an officer who followed Napoleon to Elba and commissioned the monument pictured on the label.

Tasting Notes
The nose is discreet and floral, with delicate violet notes. On the palate, a floral opening and hint of mint lead into red-fruit flavours of raspberry and cherry, with stone-fruit nuances and a touch of liquorice. The overall impression is fresh, poised and notably pure in its aromas. The wine’s structure and extended oak maturation give it good ageing potential; further time in the cellar is likely to bring added complexity.

Production
The vineyard’s old Pinot Noir vines grow in clay and limestone soils, which lend the wine freshness and tension. Vineyard work follows strict organic principles, with careful manual leaf thinning to improve the bunches’ exposure to sunlight, followed by hand harvesting. Vinification is carried out to preserve the character of the fruit, and the wine matures in oak barrels for 20–22 months.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with roast duck, roast chicken, or pork, and with dishes featuring mushrooms or herbs. A short decant of around 30 minutes can help the wine open up, though older bottles are best poured gently and tasted before deciding whether to decant.
