Description

Pico Maccario Barolo Cannubi 2017 is a single-vineyard expression from one of Barolo’s most legendary crus, Cannubi, in the heart of Piemonte. Crafted entirely from Nebbiolo, this wine combines the vineyard’s famed elegance and perfume with the structure and depth of an excellent traditional Barolo. The 2017 vintage delivers a poised balance between ripeness and classical tension, making it a compelling choice for both collectors and devoted Nebbiolo lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, typical of Nebbiolo even at a relatively youthful stage. The nose is refined and complex, offering aromas of rose petals, dried violets, tar, and sweet spices, layered with red cherry, raspberry, and hints of tobacco, licorice, and underbrush as it opens in the glass. On the palate, Cannubi’s hallmark finesse comes through in silky yet persistent tannins, supporting a core of ripe red berries, pomegranate, and sour cherry. Subtle notes of leather, truffle, and dried herbs emerge with air, framed by fresh acidity and a long, savory finish. While already approachable with proper aeration, this 2017 still has firm structure and vibrant acidity, suggesting solid aging potential of 10–15 years or more in good cellaring conditions, during which it will gain further complexity and tertiary nuances.

Production
Cannubi is one of Barolo’s most historic and prized vineyards, sitting on a ridge where different soil formations intersect, combining sand, limestone, and clay to yield wines of remarkable perfume and finesse. The microclimate is warm but well-ventilated, allowing Nebbiolo to ripen fully while preserving freshness and aromatic detail. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal phenolic ripeness to preserve berry integrity and strict selection starts in the vineyard. In the cellar, traditional vinification with temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration on the skins helps extract fine tannins and complex aromatics. The wine is then aged in oak—often a mix that emphasizes refinement over overt wood influence—followed by bottle aging to allow the powerful structure and Cannubi’s elegant character to harmonize before release.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a classic partner for rich Piedmontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo (Barolo-braised beef), tajarin with truffle, and veal or game in savory reductions. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Castelmagno, and mature Pecorino, as well as mushroom-based dishes and roasted lamb. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to fully express its aromatics. Decant for 1–2 hours if drinking now to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decanting just to remove sediment.

Producer
Pico Maccario is a family-owned estate based in Mombaruzzo in Piemonte, founded in the late 1990s by brothers Pico and Vitaliano Maccario. Originally acclaimed for their high-quality Barbera d’Asti, they have steadily expanded their focus to include some of the most prestigious appellations of the region, including Barolo from top sites such as Cannubi. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard management, low yields, and a philosophy that combines traditional Piedmontese winemaking with modern precision. Over the years, Pico Maccario wines have garnered strong critical praise and are recognized for offering clear expressions of terroir with a polished, contemporary edge, helping to reinforce Piemonte’s reputation as one of Italy’s most important fine wine regions.
