Description
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2020 is a radiant, immediately expressive Pauillac that marries classic Left Bank structure with the estate’s signature elegance and charm. From the first swirl, it bursts from the glass with seductive aromatics and a supple, velvety texture that feels effortless yet meticulously crafted. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, “Pichon Comtesse” has long been prized for its uniquely refined, almost feminine interpretation of Pauillac power, and 2020 is a textbook example of that style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue, with a youthful sheen that hints at its concentration and energy. The nose is immediately expressive and generous, offering layers of sweet blackcurrant and ripe blueberry, intertwined with notes of clove, violet, lilac, and a subtle graphite and pencil shavings edge. Gentle hints of cedar, cigar box, and finely integrated spice from élevage add complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, with a beautifully polished, velvety mouthfeel that glides rather than grips. The core is driven by pure blackcurrant and dark berry fruit, lifted by floral tones and framed by ultra-fine tannins. There are no hard edges; everything feels seamless and harmonious, with perfectly judged freshness balancing the ripe fruit. The finish is long, refined, and spice-tinged, echoing clove, subtle cocoa, and a touch of crushed stone. While already disarmingly charming in its youth, the structure and intensity suggest excellent aging potential over 15–25 years, gaining further depth and complexity with time in the cellar.
Production
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande lies on the gravelly plateau of Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep layers of Günzian gravel over clay and sand provide perfect drainage and stress for Cabernet Sauvignon, while pockets of clay and limestone favor Merlot and the complementary varieties. The 2020 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season, with careful canopy management and strict selection ensuring optimal ripeness without excess. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, often by hand, to preserve berry integrity and allow meticulous sorting at the winery. The wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to emphasize finesse over sheer power, then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to refine the tannins and add subtle spice and structure without dominating the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Pichon Comtesse pairs beautifully with refined dishes that match its elegance and depth: roasted lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, venison or other game birds, and classic French dishes such as duck breast, pigeon, or a truffled poultry fricassée. It also works wonderfully alongside aged hard cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both the aromatics and the freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours will help the wine fully unfurl and integrate its aromatic layers; as it matures, a shorter decant—simply to remove any sediment—will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, often affectionately called “Pichon Comtesse,” is one of Pauillac’s most revered estates and a star of the 1855 Second Growths. The property traces its origins back to the late 17th century and has long been associated with a style of Pauillac that is notably more sensual and refined than many of its neighbors, often described as having an almost Margaux-like grace. Over the decades, careful investment in the vineyards and cellar, along with a relentless focus on precision and terroir expression, have solidified its status as one of the Left Bank’s benchmarks. Today, Pichon Comtesse is celebrated for producing some of the most consistently sought-after wines in Bordeaux—wines that combine depth, structure, and ageworthiness with a trademark silkiness and charm.
