Description

Pichon Baron 2003 is a refined Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates, offering the depth and structure collectors look for in a top-class Left Bank wine. As a 2ème Grand Cru Classé, it carries the pedigree of a historic classified growth, and the warm 2003 vintage gave it a notably generous, mature profile.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet core with some evolved brick at the rim, reflecting its age. The nose leans toward blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, and graphite, with hints of dried herbs and earthy spice emerging with time in the glass. On the palate, this is a classic Pauillac style: structured, savoury, and precise, with ripe dark fruit supported by firm tannins and a long, mineral finish. The 2003 vintage is known for being more opulent than many Bordeaux years, so this wine often combines power with a softer, riper texture. It is drinking well now, though well-stored bottles may continue to hold for several years more.

Production
Pichon Baron is based in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s gravelly Left Bank, where the deep, well-drained soils are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and help deliver wines with tension, concentration, and age-worthy structure. The estate’s vineyards benefit from the cooling influence of nearby water and classic Bordeaux terroir, which supports slow ripening and aromatic complexity. The wine is typically vinified using traditional Bordeaux methods, with careful parcel selection and ageing in French oak to build depth and refinement.

Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef Wellington, duck breast, venison, or rich mushroom dishes. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if the bottle is recently opened or if you want to soften the tannins and bring out the aromatics.

Producer
Château Pichon Baron is one of Pauillac’s benchmark estates and has long been recognised for producing powerful, structured wines with serious ageing potential. Classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it is part of Bordeaux’s most prestigious wine hierarchy and has earned a strong reputation among collectors and fine-wine lovers. Over the years, the estate has been widely acclaimed for combining classic Pauillac character with impressive precision and consistency.
