Description
Pétrus 2015 is one of the great cult wines of Bordeaux, coveted for its rarity, precision and almost mythical status among collectors. Made from pure Merlot in Pomerol, it stands apart from the famous First Growths with its singular focus, tiny production and unmistakable depth. Few wines carry this much prestige with such understated confidence.
Tasting Notes
Medium to deep garnet-purple in the glass, the 2015 Pétrus opens gradually, revealing layered aromas of crushed black cherries, warm plums, mulberries and cedar, followed by subtle notes of anise, lavender, beef drippings, wild thyme and crushed stone. It is beautifully nuanced and slow to unfold, rewarding patience in the glass.
On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, rich and expansive, with generous red, black and blue fruit wrapped in very fine, firm tannins. The texture is silky yet structured, with seamless acidity and a long, mineral finish. This is a wine built for the long haul, with the potential to evolve gracefully for 20 years and cellar confidently for 40 years or more.
Production
Pétrus comes from the right bank appellation of Pomerol in Bordeaux, where the estate’s exceptional terroir is centered on clay-rich soils that are especially well suited to Merlot. The vineyards are managed with meticulous care, and the fruit is harvested by hand to preserve purity and precision. Vinification is carried out with the same exacting attention, allowing the wine to express concentration, finesse and the signature velvety texture that defines the estate.
Food & Serving
This is a wine best enjoyed with refined dishes that can match its richness and depth, such as roast duck, filet of beef, lamb saddle, pigeon or truffle-infused cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for several hours if drinking young, as the wine benefits greatly from air and time to open.
Producer
Château Pétrus is one of the most iconic estates in Bordeaux and a true benchmark for Pomerol. Its rise to cult status accelerated in the 1950s under the influence of Jean-Pierre Moueix, with later stewardship by his son Christian Moueix further elevating its reputation. Today, Pétrus is celebrated worldwide for its rarity, consistency and extraordinary quality, with no second wine and only a single grand vin produced.
