Description

Pétrus 2009 is one of the most coveted red wines in the world, and this vintage shows exactly why the name sits at the very top of so many collectors’ wish lists. Produced entirely from Merlot on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, it combines rare depth, power, and refinement in a wine that has become a true modern legend.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Pétrus is typically dense and deeply colored, showing a dark plum-purple core that hints at its concentration. The nose is rich and expressive, with mulberries, black cherries, subtle toast, licorice, and a floral lift that adds elegance to the wine’s opulent fruit profile. On the palate, it is full-bodied and intensely layered, with stunning concentration, velvety tannins, and a sweet, polished texture that gives the wine an almost seamless feel. The finish is long and persistent, balancing richness with freshness, and it has the structure and balance to age beautifully for decades. While already compelling, this is a wine with exceptional aging potential, likely to evolve gracefully well into mid-century and beyond.

Production
Pétrus comes from the Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where clay-rich soils and an ideal microclimate help Merlot reach exceptional ripeness and depth. The estate is famed for its small scale, old vines—many of them around a century old—and an exacting approach to vineyard work, with harvesting done by hand to ensure only the best fruit is selected. Vinification is carried out with meticulous care to preserve purity, concentration, and the vineyard’s signature silkiness.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for equally special occasions and pairs beautifully with dishes such as beef tenderloin, roasted lamb, duck breast, truffle dishes, or mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for a short period if opening young, though a mature bottle may be best opened gently and enjoyed with minimal handling.

Producer
Château Pétrus is one of Bordeaux’s most famous estates, located in Pomerol and renowned for producing a single grand vin rather than a second label. Its modern rise began in the mid-20th century under Jean-Pierre Moueix, whose influence helped establish Pétrus as a global benchmark for Merlot-based wine, later continued by Christian Moueix. Today, the estate is considered one of the most prestigious names in fine wine, admired for its rarity, consistency, and cult status.
