Description
Petrus 2004 is one of those rare wines that sits at the very top of Bordeaux’s cult hierarchy: a pure Merlot from Pomerol, produced in tiny quantities and sought after by collectors worldwide. Unlike the famous First Growths of the Left Bank, Petrus stands apart for its Right Bank identity, its singular focus on Merlot, and the quiet confidence of a wine that needs no classification to prove its greatness.
Tasting Notes
Deep medium red in the glass, Petrus 2004 shows a remarkably refined and layered bouquet. Aromas of mulberry, red cherry, toffee, caramel, iron, flowers, and a subtle mineral edge unfold with remarkable precision, while the palate is initially tight before opening into a broad, vibrant, and deeply focused mid-palate.
This is a classy, firmly built Petrus with impressive aromatic persistence and a tightly wound core of spice and minerality. Still relatively backward for the vintage, it has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over time, likely developing more tertiary notes of truffle, toffee, and other savory complexities with extended cellaring.
Production
Petrus comes from the Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where the estate’s exceptional terroir, old Merlot vines, and meticulous hand work define the wine’s character. The vineyard is renowned for its clay-rich soils and the extremely low yields that contribute to Petrus’ concentration, finesse, and depth, and the estate vinifies only one wine: its Grand Vin.
Food & Serving
Best served with refined dishes that can match its depth and texture, such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, truffle risotto, or game birds. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently if opening young; however, for a wine of this stature and age, a cautious decant shortly before serving is usually preferable to preserve its aromatic detail.
Producer
Château Petrus is one of the most legendary names in wine, with a modern rise to fame that began in the 1950s under the influence of Jean-Pierre Moueix, who helped elevate the estate to cult status. Later guided by his son Christian Moueix, Petrus became synonymous with rarity, precision, and prestige, and it remains one of the most admired producers in Bordeaux and beyond.
