Description
Pétrus 1998 is one of those rare Bordeaux wines that needs little introduction: a cult Pomerol built entirely on Merlot and revered for its extraordinary concentration, purity, and elegance. Produced in extremely small quantities from one of the world’s most coveted estates, it has long stood as a benchmark for luxury right-bank Bordeaux and remains a true bucket-list wine for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
Tasting Notes
The 1998 vintage shows a deep plum-purple colour and a remarkably expressive bouquet of black fruits, lifted by notes of caramel, mocha, and vanilla. On the nose and palate, it is intensely aromatic, super-concentrated, and full-bodied, yet beautifully balanced by fresh acidity and soft, sweet tannins.
The mid-palate is lush and layered, with the kind of velvety richness Pétrus is famous for, leading to a long, persistent finish that can linger for well over 40 seconds. This is a wine built for patience and has superb aging potential, comfortably rewarding cellaring across decades.
Production
Pétrus comes from the Pomerol plateau on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where the estate’s soils and climate are ideally suited to Merlot. The vines are exceptionally old, with many more than a century in age, and the vineyard is farmed with meticulous attention to detail to preserve precision and depth in the fruit. Production is famously tiny, with only the finest parcels selected for the grand vin and no second wine made at the château.
The winemaking aims to protect purity and concentration, combining traditional expertise with an uncompromising selection process. The result is a wine of immense texture, layered fruit, and the signature finesse that has made Pétrus one of the most celebrated names in Bordeaux.
Food & Serving
Given its richness and stature, Pétrus 1998 is best served with refined dishes such as filet of beef, roasted lamb, veal tenderloin, or truffle-scented poultry. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting gently for at least 1–2 hours if drinking now, especially to allow its deep aromatics to fully open.
Producer
Château Pétrus is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, though its rise to global fame is relatively recent compared with the region’s historic first-growth châteaux. The estate’s reputation was transformed in the mid-20th century under the influence of Jean-Pierre Moueix, whose stewardship helped elevate Pétrus to legendary status. Today, the Moueix family continues that legacy, and the estate is widely regarded as one of the finest producers in the world, known for exceptional quality, extreme scarcity, and a near-mythical reputation among wine lovers.
