Petra Rosso 2022 is a modern Tuscan red that blends Bordeaux elegance with Mediterranean warmth. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, it offers immediate charm yet carries the structure to age gracefully. This cuvée reflects Petra’s vision of coastal Tuscany as a world-class terroir for refined, polished reds that stand apart from traditional Sangiovese-driven wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Petra Rosso 2022 shows a deep, vivid ruby color with purple highlights at the rim, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose is inviting and layered, with aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry, and plum interwoven with notes of graphite, cedar, wild herbs, and a touch of sweet spice and cocoa from careful oak aging.
On the palate, this is a supple yet structured wine, with velvety tannins and a generous, fruit-forward core. Juicy dark berries and redcurrant are lifted by fresh acidity, while hints of tobacco leaf, baking spices, and a subtle mineral edge add complexity on the mid-palate. The finish is long and polished, with lingering notes of dark fruit and a faint savory touch. Enjoyable now with a brief decant, it has the balance to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining additional nuance and softness.
Production
Petra Rosso is born on Petra’s coastal Tuscan vineyards, where sun-drenched slopes, well-drained mineral-rich soils, and cooling sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. After gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve aroma and fruit purity, followed by aging in a combination of oak (often French barriques or larger casks) and tank to harmonize the tannins, integrate subtle oak spice, and retain the wine’s fresh, vibrant character.
Food & Serving
Petra Rosso 2022 is a versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, herb-crusted lamb, slow-cooked beef ragù, and rich pasta dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar or mushroom-based sauces. It also complements aged cheeses, charcuterie, and hearty vegetarian plates built around roasted root vegetables, lentils, or eggplant. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatics and texture. A 30–60 minute decant is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s layered bouquet to fully open.
Producer
Petra is a contemporary Tuscan estate that has quickly gained recognition for its architectural winery and its expressive, terroir-driven wines. Located near Suvereto on the Maremma coast, Petra was founded with the ambition of showcasing how international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc can thrive in coastal Tuscany’s unique climate and soils. The estate’s striking gravity-flow winery and meticulous vineyard work have made Petra a reference point for modern Tuscan reds, contributing to the region’s reputation as one of Italy’s most exciting areas for powerful yet refined wines.
