Description
Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2017 is the distinguished second wine of one of Pauillac’s most iconic estates, offering a refined introduction to the power and precision associated with Château Mouton Rothschild. Crafted in the heart of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, it brings together classic Cabernet-driven structure with elegance, depth, and remarkable pedigree.
Tasting Notes
The 2017 vintage typically shows a deep ruby-garnet color with attractive brightness in the glass. On the nose, expect layered aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, ripe plum, and subtle floral notes, with hints of spice and toasted oak adding complexity.
The palate is polished and medium-bodied, with fine tannins, fresh acidity, and a core of dark berry fruit framed by Pauillac’s characteristic mineral and savory nuances. It is approachable in youth, but should also develop further complexity over the next 8–15 years, gaining more earthy, tobacco-like depth with time.
Production
Sourced from the gravelly soils of Pauillac, the wine reflects the classic Left Bank terroir that favors Cabernet Sauvignon and its supporting varieties. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then vinified with careful extraction to preserve freshness, purity, and balance before aging in French oak barrels, which add structure and refinement.
Food & Serving
Ideal with roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, or dishes featuring mushrooms and truffle. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about 1 hour if drinking young to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Petit Mouton is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild, a First Growth estate in Pauillac with a celebrated history and global reputation. As part of one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious properties, it benefits from exceptional vineyard sites and meticulous winemaking, offering a more approachable expression of Mouton’s quality and style while still reflecting the estate’s excellence.
