Description

Peter Michael L’Esprit des Pavots 2017 is a beautifully composed Bordeaux-style blend from one of California’s most respected estates, offering remarkable finesse and immediate charm. Crafted from fruit grown on Peter Michael’s own vineyards, it delivers the depth and structure expected from a flagship cuvée, while showing a more approachable, polished profile than the estate’s top wine. In an outstanding 2017 vintage, it stands as a compelling introduction to the quality and style of Peter Michael.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, concentrated ruby color that hints at its richness. The nose opens with dark cherry, plum, chocolate, black truffle, leather, licorice, and cedar, layered with the sort of savory complexity that invites repeated visits. The palate is medium-bodied yet impressively supple, with velvety tannins and a seamless texture. The dark fruit and spice notes echo the aromatics, framed by classic Bordeaux-like elegance and a long, satisfying finish. While already delicious now, it should continue to evolve gracefully over the next several years.

Production
L’Esprit des Pavots is sourced from Peter Michael’s estate vineyards, Les Pavots and Au Paradis, in California’s cool-climate mountain terrain. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon and supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, with the 2017 vintage assembled by winemaker Nicolas Morlet. After harvest, the wine spent 18 months aging in French oak barrels, helping to refine the tannins and add depth, spice, and integration.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs wonderfully with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, duck breast, wild mushroom dishes, and truffle risotto. It also works beautifully with aged cheeses and richly flavored game. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 30–60 minutes if drinking now to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open.

Producer
Peter Michael Winery has become one of California’s benchmark producers for site-driven, Bordeaux-inspired wines, with a reputation built on precision viticulture and limited production. The estate’s mountain vineyards are highly regarded for their ability to produce wines of power, freshness, and age-worthy structure. Under the direction of winemaker Nicolas Morlet, the winery has earned significant acclaim for wines that combine Old World elegance with New World intensity.
