Description
Paul Jaboulet Aîné’s La Chapelle is one of Hermitage’s true benchmark wines, celebrated for showing the full grandeur of Syrah at its most refined and ageworthy. The 2003 vintage adds a distinctive warm-year intensity to this historic cuvée, resulting in a monumental wine with remarkable depth, concentration, and presence.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine appears dark, dense, and deeply coloured, reflecting the concentration of the vintage. The nose is powerful and layered, with ripe blackberries, blackcurrants, plums, and dried prunes, framed by dark chocolate, spice, tobacco, and toasted oak.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and firmly structured, with ripe tannins and an intense core of dark fruit. The warmth of 2003 gives the wine a generous, almost opulent style, yet it remains true to Hermitage in its depth and seriousness. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, and it should continue to gain complexity over time.
Production
The grapes come from some of Hermitage Hill’s most historic parcels, including Les Bessards and Le Méal, where steep slopes and varied soils provide the classic terroir for great Syrah. In the very hot 2003 growing season, the small berries developed thick skins and exceptional concentration. Vinification followed the estate’s traditional approach, with fermentation in stainless steel tanks and maturation in oak barrels to build structure, complexity, and longevity.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with rich, slow-cooked dishes such as braised beef, game, lamb, or roasted duck, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open and soften its tannins, especially if drinking it now.
Producer
Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected historic producers, and La Chapelle has long been the estate’s flagship wine. The house has played a defining role in establishing Hermitage’s reputation on the world stage, and La Chapelle is widely regarded as one of the region’s greatest Syrah expressions, with a long track record of critical acclaim and collector interest.
