Description
Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle 2003 is a monumental expression of Syrah from one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated hillsides. Drawn from historic parcels on Hermitage and shaped by the heat of the 2003 vintage, it combines deep concentration, power, and the timeless pedigree that has made La Chapelle a benchmark wine for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is dark, dense, and almost opaque, hinting at its concentration and structure. The nose is intense and layered, with ripe blackberries, cassis, plums, dark chocolate, spice, tobacco, and subtle toasted oak.
The palate is full-bodied, rich, and forceful, carrying the warmth of the vintage through thick, ripe fruit and firm tannins. Despite its generosity, it remains serious and structured, with a long, warm finish and the capacity to gain additional complexity with further aging.
Production
The grapes came from some of the Hermitage hill’s most historic parcels, including Les Bessards and Le Méal, where the terroir is known for producing Syrah of exceptional depth and character. The extreme summer heat of 2003 yielded small berries with thick skins and high concentration, resulting in a wine of great intensity. Vinification followed the estate’s traditional approach, with fermentation in stainless steel tanks and maturation in oak barrels to build structure, depth, and age-worthy finesse.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for equally bold dishes such as roasted lamb, beef short ribs, game, or slow-cooked stews with herbs and pepper. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours, especially if drinking now, to allow the wine’s layers and texture to open fully.
Producer
Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the Rhône Valley’s most historic and respected producers, and La Chapelle has long been its flagship Hermitage wine. The estate’s reputation has been built on defining Syrah at the highest level, with La Chapelle widely regarded as one of the great wines of the region. Over the decades, it has achieved iconic status among collectors and Rhône enthusiasts alike.
