Description

Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2019 in the rare Solomon (18L) format is a commanding expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most legendary wines. Sourced from the hallowed slopes of Hermitage, this pure Syrah marries power and finesse in a way that has made La Chapelle a benchmark for collectors and connoisseurs alike. Bottled in a monumental large format ideal for long-term aging and grand occasions, this 2019 has already drawn near-perfect critical acclaim and is poised to evolve for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Chapelle shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a bright purple rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered, opening with aromas of roasted meat and smoked charcuterie, followed by mocha, crushed stone, ripe plum and blackcurrant, all wrapped in a subtle halo of spice. With air, notes of black olive, violets and a touch of graphite begin to emerge, hinting at the wine’s complexity and mineral backbone. On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and richly textured, yet remarkably poised. The tannins are abundant and firm, but velvety and finely grained, giving the wine a powerful structure without harshness. Dark fruit—blackberry, cassis and plum—interplays with savory elements of crushed black pepper, salted licorice and grilled herbs. The finish is long, layered and persistent, with lingering notes of spice, mineral and dark chocolate. In the Solomon format, the wine’s aging curve will be significantly extended: expect it to develop gracefully over 20–30+ years, gradually revealing more truffle, leather and game as the primary fruit mellows.

Production
La Chapelle Hermitage is drawn from some of the finest parcels on the storied Hermitage hill in the northern Rhône, where steep, sun-drenched granitic slopes and complex soils of decomposed granite, pebbles and clay lend Syrah its trademark intensity and minerality. Vines here are typically low-yielding, carefully tended and harvested by hand due to the challenging, terraced terrain. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally vinified parcel by parcel, with meticulous sorting and temperature-controlled fermentation to capture both aromatic purity and depth of flavor. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, a portion of which is new, to add subtle spice and structure without overwhelming the character of the fruit or the imprint of the terroir, before blending and bottling into this exceptional Solomon format for extended maturation.

Food & Serving
This monumental Hermitage calls for equally noble cuisine: think roast lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef short ribs, venison or other game, duck breast with dark berry sauce, or richly seasoned stews like daube de boeuf. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, farmhouse cheddar or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended: for the 18L Solomon, consider a generous decant of at least 2–3 hours in its early years, and even longer for special occasions, allowing the wine to unfurl its full spectrum of aromas and flavors.
