Description

Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2019 in double magnum (3 L) is a modern benchmark of northern Rhône Syrah, presented in a format made for long-term cellaring and truly grand occasions. Sourced from the legendary Hermitage hill, this cuvée has long been regarded as one of the world’s great red wines, capable of decades of evolution. The 2019 vintage is already being whispered about as a future classic, uniting sumptuous richness with the precision and minerality that have defined La Chapelle for generations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Chapelle shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered, with seductive aromas of roasted and gamey meat, dark plums and blackcurrants, mocha, and crushed stone. As it opens, more Rhône-typical notes emerge: cracked black pepper, smoked herbs, and a subtle savory edge that hints at olive tapenade and cured meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, yet remarkably refined in texture, with a velvety tannic frame that coats the mouth without any harshness. Dark berry fruit—blackcurrant, blackberry, and ripe damson—intertwines with notes of espresso, cocoa, and a stony, graphite-like minerality. The finish is very long and complex, marked by hints of crushed black pepper, salted licorice, and a lingering savoriness that invites another sip. Still very young, this 2019 has substantial tannic structure and acidity to support 20–30 years of aging in the 3 L format, and very likely longer under ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
La Chapelle is drawn from some of the most revered parcels on the Hermitage hill, where Syrah vines grow on steep, sun-drenched slopes of decomposed granite, limestone, and stony scree that force the roots deep into the subsoil. This exceptional terroir, combining warm southern exposures with the cooling influence of the Rhône River and Mistral winds, yields grapes of great concentration and aromatic complexity. Harvesting is done by hand, often in multiple passes, to select only perfectly ripe bunches from these low-yielding vines. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted, then traditionally vinified, with a focus on gentle extraction to preserve finesse alongside power. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in a judicious mix of oak barrels—often with a portion of new oak—to refine the tannins, build texture, and allow the wine’s distinctive mineral and savory notes to emerge without being overwhelmed by wood.

Food & Serving
This is a grand, contemplative red that shines alongside richly flavored, protein-driven dishes. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, slow-braised beef short ribs, venison or other game birds, or a classic côte de boeuf with charred edges and a pepper crust. Earthy accompaniments such as wild mushrooms, truffled potato purée, or lentils cooked with lardons will echo the wine’s savory, mineral backbone. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and, given the youth and concentration of the 2019, decant generously—at least 2–3 hours in advance, and even longer if opened within its first decade. In double magnum, this is an ideal centerpiece for a shared meal, allowing the wine to evolve in the glass over the course of an evening.

Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic houses of the Rhône Valley and an undisputed reference for Hermitage. The estate’s identity is inseparable from La Chapelle, named after the small chapel of Saint-Christophe that overlooks the hill and has become a symbol of the appellation. Over the years, La Chapelle has produced some of the most celebrated vintages in Rhône history and has helped cement Hermitage’s reputation as one of the world’s great terroirs for Syrah. Since the Frey family took over in 2006, significant investments in vineyard management, lower yields, and more precise winemaking have further elevated quality. Today, Paul Jaboulet Aîné stands as a benchmark producer in the northern Rhône, with La Chapelle at the pinnacle of its range and consistently among the region’s most sought-after wines.
