Description
Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2011 is a benchmark northern Rhône Syrah from one of the most storied single vineyards in France. Sourced from the legendary slopes of Hermitage, this cuvée is prized for its depth, complexity, and age‑worthy structure. The 2011 vintage shows a more sun‑kissed, perfumed character, capturing the warmth of the year while retaining the finesse that has made La Chapelle an icon since the mid‑20th century.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 La Chapelle Hermitage is a deep, glowing ruby with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its evolution while still retaining impressive concentration. The nose is expressive and inviting, showing black raspberries and dark cherries layered with notes of crushed stone, black olive tapenade, smoked meat, and licorice, alongside subtle hints of violets, garrigue herbs, and a touch of spice.
On the palate, it is full‑bodied and generous, with sweet, ripe black fruit at its core balanced by a savory, mineral backbone. Flavors of black raspberry, blackberry compote, and plum mingle with olive, graphite, and anise, supported by polished, sweet tannins that give both grip and charm. The texture is broad and mouth‑coating yet never heavy, thanks to a vibrant underlying freshness. Already open and accessible, this 2011 will continue to develop more tertiary nuances—leather, truffle, and dried flowers—over the next two decades or more, rewarding those who cellar it.
Production
La Chapelle Hermitage is drawn from some of the finest parcels on the Hermitage hill, including steep, granitic and schistous slopes that face predominantly south and southeast, maximizing sun exposure while cool Rhône breezes preserve acidity. These old Syrah vines, many of them deeply rooted, are cultivated with great respect for the terroir and typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest, optimally ripe grapes. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally vinified: extended maceration to extract color, aroma, and tannin from the thick‑skinned Syrah berries, followed by slow fermentation in temperature‑controlled vats. It is then aged in French oak barrels—often a mix of new and seasoned wood—to refine the tannins, add subtle spice, and allow the vineyard character to emerge with clarity.
Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes such as lamb shank, roast leg of lamb with herbs, grilled or slow‑braised beef, game birds, and dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils, or black olives. It pairs beautifully with French classics like duck breast, beef daube Provençale, or a simple plate of aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, both to let the bouquet unfurl and to soften the tannins; more extended decanting can be beneficial if the bottle is opened on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic names of the Rhône Valley and a reference point for Hermitage wines. La Chapelle, named after the small chapel that crowns the Hermitage hill, became world‑famous after the legendary 1961 vintage and has since been regarded as one of the great Syrahs of France. Under the stewardship of the Frey family since 2006, the estate has invested heavily in vineyard care and quality‑focused winemaking, moving towards organic and biodynamic principles. Today, Paul Jaboulet Aîné stands as a leading producer in the northern Rhône, consistently crafting age‑worthy, terroir‑driven wines that embody the character and prestige of this revered region.
