Description
Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Comtesse Marie de France Brut 2014 is a pure expression of Bouzy Pinot Noir, crafted only in exceptional vintages. This single-varietal, Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs combines power, depth and finesse, capturing the character of one of Champagne’s most celebrated Pinot terroirs. Named in homage to an historic noble figure, it stands as one of the flagship cuvées of the estate and a benchmark for serious Champagne lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Comtesse Marie de France shows a brilliant, deep lemon-gold hue with fine, persistent bubbles forming a delicate mousse. The nose is complex and layered, offering ripe red apple, white peach and Mirabelle plum alongside notes of brioche, toasted hazelnut, chalky minerality and a hint of spice and dried flowers.
On the palate, this Champagne is structured and precise, showcasing the natural intensity of Pinot Noir from Bouzy. Expect a generous core of yellow stone fruits and baked orchard fruit wrapped in vibrant acidity, with accents of citrus zest, almond cream, subtle red berry tones and a saline, mineral edge. The finish is long, dry and elegantly vinous, with a fine balance between richness and tension. With its concentration and backbone, the 2014 vintage has excellent aging potential; it will drink beautifully now but can continue to evolve gracefully for at least another 8–12 years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Sourced exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards in Bouzy, the Comtesse Marie de France 2014 is rooted in south-facing, chalk-rich slopes that are ideally suited to Pinot Noir. The fruit is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve both freshness and aromatic purity. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and vinified parcel by parcel, with controlled fermentation to highlight terroir expression. The wine undergoes extended aging on its lees in bottle—typically many years—developing fine texture and complexity before disgorgement. A carefully judged Brut dosage keeps the style dry and gastronomic, allowing the depth of old-vine Pinot Noir and Bouzy’s signature minerality to take center stage.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Blanc de Noirs pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as lobster with butter, seared scallops, or roasted turbot, as well as poultry like roast chicken, guinea fowl, or duck with a light jus. It also complements earthy dishes—veal with morels, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmesan. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F). Decanting is not essential, but pouring into larger white wine glasses or opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving will help the wine open up its full aromatic range.
